Rental renovations are considered ‘capital works’. When claiming any deductions for capital works, you must wait until the work is complete.

📣 Update: After auditing more than 50 taxpayers, we uncovered over $25 million in unpaid tax and super. Businesses caught out will be hit with significant penalties and interest. The Fair Work Ombudsman Australian Department of Home Affairs
We’re cracking down on labour hire providers suspected of underpaying and exploiting farm workers. This week we teamed up with The Fair Work Ombudsman and Australian Department of Home Affairs to investigate suspected worker exploitation in the agriculture industry. This was part of Operation Topaz in southeast Queensland.

Wondering if you should vary your pay as you go (PAYG) instalments? 🤔 If your PAYG instalments will be more (or less) than your expected tax for the year, you can change the amount you pay. This’ll help your prepayment to be as close to your expected tax as possible. Just remember that underestimating your instalments can result in penalties or general interest charge. You can vary your instalments through your myGov account, or check with a registered tax agent if you’d like expert advice.

If you’ve received crypto assets as a gift, you don’t pay capital gains tax (CGT) when you receive it. ✅ Record the market value on the day you received it – it becomes your cost base ✅ Keep detailed records to make tax time easier. However, when you later sell, swap, or use that crypto, CGT may apply. Be crypto smart.

😇 Sure, you can claim you’re the best worker in your team. But you can’t claim the food and alcohol you buy at the office end of year party. Food and drinks at work functions are considered private in nature. They’re not deductible. Tip: there are different rules if you’re an employer providing food and drinks. In this case, you’ll need to check if FBT applies.

Claiming a deduction for a gift you donated this season to get on the nice list? 😇 Just make sure you don’t end up on our naughty list this year! 😉 When donating, make sure you check the deductible gift recipient (DGR) status of the charity or organisation you’re donating to. 👉 Remember, you can only claim donations that are money or property that meets certain conditions.
