Each year the Council recognise local business milestones through the presentation of the Mayor’s Business Commendation Awards. This year's recipients were: - Barbara Jayne Dance Centre (50 years) - pictured - Big Star CD’s & Records (25 years) - Theatre Bugs (25 years) - Wealth Transfer (25 years) - Zhav International (25 years) - 1645 Roasters (10 years) - Amadio Wines (10 years) - Blackeby’s Sweets (10 years), and - Essential Chinese Massage (10 years). These awards shine a light on the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters’ outstanding achievement in holding the nation’s lowest business-failure risk for 16 consecutive months—an exceptional testament to the confidence, strength and resilience of our local business community. Mayor Robert Bria describes this result as, “An incredible demonstration of our City’s economic strength and community resilience”. “When you consider there are 537 councils in Australia, achieving the top ranking for the lowest business failure risk once is remarkable, but maintaining that for 16 consecutive months is truly outstanding,” Mayor Bria continues. This accolade is backed by South Australia being ruled as the best place to do business in the nation by the Business Council of Australia. “I could argue that, combined, these two results truly do position the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters as the best place in the nation to do business, so it’s little surprise that the major banks all choose The Parade.” Congratulations to our local businesses for their resilience, passion and overall success.

Why our Youth Action Plan matters! The Council recently launched its Youth Action Plan 2025–2027, a fresh and focused roadmap that puts our young people front and centre. As parents/caregivers, grandparents and friends, we all want the best for our young people. We want them to grow up in a safe, inclusive and vibrant community that not only hears their voices but actively supports their dreams. That’s exactly what this plan sets out to do. A range of priorities are proposed to be delivered over the next two years that align with the key themes of South Australia's Youth Action Plan: - Greater access to mental health support and services. - Connection to services and activities available in the young person’s community. - Increased access to age appropriate, affordable, and accessible sport and recreation activities and opportunities. - More support with post-school pathways, including the teaching of ‘life skills’ or ‘how to adult.’ - Inclusion in decision-making. More than just words on a page, the plan is packed with real-world actions and opportunities, from co-designed school holiday programs and youth leadership initiatives, to job readiness workshops, live music events and mental health seminars. Verges (or nature strips) are important components of our local streetscapes and help to define and enhance the character and visual appeal of local streets. The Council’s Verge Incentive Program supports individuals and groups to landscape the verge adjacent to their property by providing financial assistance. This program provides up to $500 in financial assistance to eligible property owners and residents to landscape the verge in front of their property. Works eligible for assistance may include: - removal of existing quarry rubble, dolomite or quartzite, - supply and spreading of soil, compost and mulch, and/or - supply and installation of plants and irrigation. Encouraging the development of verge gardens aligns with the Council’s commitment to fostering greener, cooler and more liveable communities. A well-designed and maintained verge offers multiple benefits: - improved kerb appeal – boosting the visual appeal and value of your property, - stormwater benefits – helping absorb rainwater and reduce urban runoff, community pride – contributing to a shared sense of ownership and care for public spaces, and - environmental gains – supporting biodiversity and reducing urban heat through increased vegetation. The collective impact of more vegetated verges and fewer hard surfaces across the city helps to mitigate the effects of extreme summer temperatures by lowering ambient heat.
