Today, Council representatives joined thousands of Victorians for the 17th annual Walk Against Family Violence in Melbourne to show their support and solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence. Our commitment to ending family violence goes far beyond these 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. At City of Port Phillip, we’re committed to creating a safer, more respectful community. We do this by promoting respect and equality through our programs and services, supporting people and families at risk, training leaders to assist staff experiencing family violence, and building a workplace where everyone feels safe and respected. Respect starts with all of us – in our homes, workplaces and communities. Together, we can create a safer, more equal Port Phillip. This week the ‘Victorian Interfaith Networks Conference’ Message Stick was presented to Council and the Port Phillip Multifaith Network acknowledging City of Port Phillip as the host of the 2026 Victorian Interfaith Networks Festival. The Message Stick represents a tradition of passing responsibility and trust between communities. By receiving it, we and the Port Phillip Multifaith Network reaffirm our commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue, inclusion, and cultural understanding. The Victorian Interfaith Networks Festival is delivered annually by the Faith Communities Council of Victoria (FCCV) in partnership with local councils and interfaith networks. Each year the event is held in a different Local Government Area (LGA) to showcase the various faith communities living in that region. City of Port Phillip last hosted in 2011. Thank you to the Faith Communities Council of Victoria and multifaith community for selecting us to host the 2026 edition and we look forward to showcasing our Port Phillip multifaith community. The Victorian Interfaith Networks Festival 2026 is expected to be held in November 2026. 📸: Message Stick received by Mayor Alex Makin FGIA FAMI CPM and Councillors Serge Thomann ONM and Libby Buckingham

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 – 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 🌱♻️ We’ve taken another big step towards delivering the vision set out in our Plan for Port Phillip and Budget 2025–35: creating an environmentally sustainable and resilient city. Our newly endorsed Waste and Recycling Strategy will help us: ✅ Reduce landfill waste – right now, half of what we send to landfill could be recycled or composted. ✅ Recover valuable resources – maximise recycling through current and new services. ✅ Deliver value for money – efficient, fairly priced services that benefit both community and environment. This strategy isn’t just about waste management – it’s about building a city that thrives while reducing its environmental footprint. 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽 We’ve opened engagement on Year 2 of the Plan for Port Phillip and Budget to ensure our city reflects the needs, ideas, and aspirations of the people who live, work, and do business here. Why does this matter? Because the choices we make now will determine how our city evolves – what gets funded, what gets improved, and how we bring new ideas to life. This year, we’re inviting input into our 2026-27 Plan and Budget earlier to ensure communities feedback can influence priorities. Whether it’s a bold initiative or a practical improvement, this helps inform the investment decisions that shape our city’s future. Find out more and have your say: https://bit.ly/4824gHh

The State Government’s rushed planning reforms (Planning Amendment - Better Decisions Made Faster Bill 2025) was developed without consulting any councils. That's not good policy reform – it's just setting up new problems. We have written to Members of Parliament to convey our concerns, including: 🏃➡️ Risk of automatic approvals: Applicants will nominate their own assessment pathway, with some proposals potentially fast-tracked without adequate checks. 🔔 Loss of public notice: Type 2 applications, including multi-dwelling developments, will not require public notice unless new Ministerial guidelines are introduced. 🌳 Environmental protections switched off: The Bill removes safeguards that allow councils to consider flooding, contamination and climate risks. 💸 Unclear donation disclosure rules: New requirements could create confusion rather than clarity around conflicts of interest. 💬 Lack of consultation on regulations: Over 100 matters are left to future regulations with no guarantee councils will be consulted. 🖥️ No funding for IT upgrades: Councils will need to overhaul systems to implement permit streaming, yet no support has been offered. 🏠 Missed opportunity for affordable housing: The Bill does not provide mechanisms to require affordable housing contributions in areas targeted for upzoning. The City of Port Phillip supports building more homes. What we don’t support is cutting corners that risk creating long-term problems for future generations.
