About us
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) works with international partners and other countries to tackle global challenges, increase trade and investment opportunities, protect international rules, keep our region stable and help Australians overseas. DFAT manages Australia’s international presence—a network of over 120 embassies, high commissions, consulates-general and representative offices across five continents —and we have over 6,000 staff located in Australia and overseas. These staff are the diplomats, negotiators, consular officers and advisers developing and delivering Australia’s foreign, trade and development policy on behalf of Australia and Australians. For 24/7 consular assistance, phone +61 2 6261 3305. DFAT acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia, and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respect to all First Nations peoples, their cultures and to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Australia’s free trade deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is historic. It’s our first agreement to include a dedicated chapter on Indigenous trade and investment cooperation – a milestone that recognises the vital role First Nations businesses play in our bilateral relationship. This week, Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell, Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy, and Ambassador for First Nations People Justin Mohammed joined Indigenous businesses and the UAE’s Ambassador to Australia, Dr Fahad Obaid Mohamed Al-Taffag, to launch the Australia–UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement First Nations Action Plan. Developed in collaboration with the pilot First Nations Trade and Investment Advisory Group, this plan is designed to help First Nations businesses expand exports of unique products and services, while strengthening economic ties with the UAE and the Middle East. The Australian Government condemns the Lukashenko regime’s ongoing repression of civil and political rights in Belarus and its support for Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine. An advocate for democracy in Belarus, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, this week briefed DFAT officials on the worsening human rights situation in Belarus. Australia has taken a strong stand, including sanctions on Lukashenko and others supporting Russia’s war. We reiterate our call for the Lukashenko regime to fully comply with its obligations under international law and to end its support for Russia’s illegal and immoral war.

Australia will contribute an additional $10 million to support the people of Sudan affected by escalating conflict and ongoing food shortages. This brings Australia’s humanitarian contributions to Sudan to more than $60 million since 2023. The new support includes: • $3 million to Australian Humanitarian Partnership NGOs to provide support to victim survivors of gender-based violence and other life-saving activities. • $7 million to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to provide critical lifesaving assistance in difficult to reach locations. Our thoughts are with the people of Sudan and the Sudanese community in Australia.
