Supporting our veterans' families.

About us

Legacy is a unique Australian charity dedicated to the care of widows and dependants of war veterans who’ve given their life or their health, as well as families of Australian Defence Force personnel killed in hazardous service, training or peacekeeping operations. Legacy was founded in 1923 by a small group of World War One veterans. Returned servicemen banded together, and eventually took up a “legacy of care” for the welfare of the wives and children of their comrades who were killed during the war, or who died subsequently. The personal contact of our volunteer Legatees is the key to the Legacy support. Individual Legatees are assigned to each family and it is this individual care and support which allows Legatees to access the support they require. In many circumstances Legatees also fulfil a special role as mentor for Junior Legatees. The Spirit of Legacy is Service. Personal effort is the main essential. Throughout Australia, Legacy’s services are provided to more than 30,000 beneficiaries, including 1,300 children and 1,100 people with a disability. It is provided by more than 3,600 members (called Legatees) and community service workers through 43 clubs Australia-wide. The Badge of Legacy symbolises in its torch the undying flame of service and sacrifice handed to us by our comrades in war who have passed on. In its wreath of laurel, with its points inverted in remembrance, is the guerdon (recognition) of honour; that is the meed (reward) of those who gave their lives for their country.

  • Christmas preparations are underway at Legacy! 🎁 Earlier this week, it was all hands on deck as Sydney Legacy put together Christmas hampers and wrapped presents for our families. The holidays can be a difficult time for many of the families we care for, both emotionally and financially. These presents are just one small way we can bring comfort and joy. These Christmas hampers are made possible through a generous donation from Activision Blizzard, whose team also volunteered their time to help prepare the gifts. Sydney Legacy also wrapped some gifts for our upcoming Family & Youth Christmas party, which were kindly donated by Safran. Thank you for helping us make the season brighter for our veterans' families 💙

  • Last Friday, Sydney Legacy held its annual Remembrance Day Lunch. This moving event is a cornerstone of Sydney Legacy’s calendar, bringing together our community in support of our veterans’ families. The words from guest speakers Legacy Junior Annalisa, Mark Donaldson VC and Veteran Liaison Officer Emma Donaldson were incredibly moving and reinforced the importance of Legacy’s mission. A big thank you to our event sponsors, Boeing Australia and Lumia Care, and to all the businesses and individuals who donated prizes to the auctions and raffle. Thank you to Langmeil Winery for supplying the event's wine, to MC Warwick Young CSC, OAM and to the Australian Army Band Sydney for providing musical entertainment. And finally, we would like to extend our gratitude to all the guests who attended. Thank you for supporting veterans' families ❤️ #RemembranceDay2025
