Wrapping up Cervical Cancer Awareness Week with something close to my heart 💛 Own It ad spotted today in Kurilpa (West End) QLD!
Last year I had the privilege of being part of the Own It self-collection campaign, standing alongside powerful community leaders, health workers and mob who are driving change in cervical cancer screening.
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, but not everyone benefits equally.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities continue to face higher rates of diagnosis and mortality, not because of biology, but because of structural barriers, systemic racism, and a lack of culturally safe care.
This work aligns closely with my PhD research at Yardhura Walani and the The Australian National University, which explores cervical screening experiences among LGBTQIA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, and how we can create culturally safe, affirming, and community-led pathways to care. Eliminating cervical cancer must centre the voices, needs and leadership of those most impacted.
Self-collection is a game-changer.
People with a cervix aged 25–74 can choose how they screen:
🌈 Collect the sample yourself using a simple swab
🌈 Or have a clinician collect it
Both options are safe, accurate, and available across the country!
Resources like the Own It Campaign were co-designed in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to support access, autonomy, dignity, and culturally safe care. Community leadership is at the heart of change and I’m so proud to play a small part in this movement.
We can eliminate cervical cancer in our lifetime but only if equity stays front and centre, and we invest in approaches that are designed with communities, not done to or for them.
If you’re due or overdue, book a yarn with your doctor, nurse, midwife, or local ACCHO to talk about screening or self-collection. Screening saves lives!!!
