On the 21st of November at NSW Parliament, Royal Life Saving NSW, together with Cox Architecture and WaterCo, launched The Future of Pools, a bold new blueprint for the next generation of community aquatic facilities. With nearly 40% of Australia’s ~1,200 public pools reaching end-of-life by 2030 — a looming $8 billion challenge — the paper outlines a modular, scalable and sustainable approach to pool design that makes projects faster, more affordable and easier for councils to deliver. This new approach is grounded in collective thinking — enabling councils, industry, designers and communities to work together to shape facilities that meet local need now, while still allowing for growth, adaptation, and shared benefit into the future. For those working in aquatics, local government, planning or community infrastructure, it’s a powerful step towards future-proof facilities nationwide. 📞 To find out how the modular approach could be applied to your community or facility, please contact Royal Life Saving NSW. In NSW, 85% of drowning deaths are men — a statistic that hits hard, and one we can change. This International Men’s Day, we’re shining a light on the everyday choices that help keep the men in our lives safe in, on, and around the water. 💬 Why are men over-represented? Risk-taking, overestimating abilities, alcohol use, and swimming in unfamiliar waterways all play a role. But with the right habits, these tragedies are preventable. How we can turn the tide: ✔️ Know your limits — strong on land doesn’t always mean strong in the water ✔️ Avoid alcohol around water — it impairs judgement, balance, and reaction time ✔️ Swim with mates — keep an eye on each other like you would anywhere else ✔️ Wear a lifejacket when boating, fishing, or rock fishing ✔️ Update CPR skills — knowing what to do in an emergency can save a life ✔️ Choose patrolled locations and follow directions from lifeguards Today’s a reminder to celebrate the men we know — and to help them get home safely after every swim, paddle, fish, or splash. Let’s work together to bring this number down, because every life lost to drowning is one too many. #InternationalMensDay #WaterSafety #DrowningPrevention #LookOutForYourMates
