Reducing low value testing to improve care and reduce our environmental impact. The Sustainable and Quality use of Diagnostics in Emergency Departments (SQuDs-ED) project launched in April 2025. Four months in, eleven health services are actively implementing improvements across 19 emergency departments in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne. We are proud to report that their collective efforts have already: • prevented 86,000 unnecessary tests • saved $1.9 million dollars • avoided 22,000 kg CO2e, equivalent to driving 113,000km in an average Australian car. Safer Care Victoria extends sincere thanks to all participating health services. Your efforts are not only improving outcomes for consumers but also helping shape a more sustainable future for healthcare in Victoria.

🎉 World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week is here! AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites evolve to resist medicines—making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of spread, severe illness and death (World Health Organization). Join us in recognising World AMR Awareness Week from 18 to 24 November. This year’s theme is: “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” At Safer Care Victoria, we’re acting now through: • Check Again Network: working to improve penicillin allergy assessment and testing for hospitalised Victorians, leading to better prescribing of antibiotics. • Antibiotic Prescribing Excellence in Primary Care: supporting GPs with tailored feedback, expert education and evidence-based guidelines to improve antibiotic use. • The Adult Sepsis Collaborative: supporting health services across Victoria to monitor and improve timely antibiotic administration in line with local guidelines, enhancing early recognition and response to sepsis in acute care settings. Let’s work together to preserve the power of antimicrobials, for today and the future Find out more about our projects in Safe Use of Medicines: https://lnkd.in/gRvHARcY #WAAW2025 #AntimicrobialResistance #AMR #SaferTogetherProgram

Today is World Prematurity Day - a moment to raise awareness, honour tiny fighters, and reflect on the journey of families affected by preterm birth. Every year, 15 million babies are born prematurely worldwide. Behind each lived experience of premature birth is a story of resilience, hope, and the tireless dedication of healthcare professionals, families, and support networks. In Australia, we are fortunate to have world-class neonatal care, but we must continue to advocate for: • Relationship-based maternity care, including continuity of midwifery care • Equitable access to specialised services, especially in rural and regional areas • Compassionate and coordinated support for families navigating the NICU and beyond To all the parents, carers, midwives, nurses, medical specialists, allied health workers, pastoral support workers and volunteers - thank you for the care you provide every day. Let’s keep working toward a system where every baby, no matter how early they arrive, has the best possible start. #WorldPrematurityDay #NeonatalCare #ContinuityOfCare #MaternityCare #Advocacy #HealthEquity

November is Prematurity Awareness Month, and 17 November marks World Prematurity Day. Preterm birth is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, but many cases can be prevented. Through the National Preterm Birth Prevention Collaborative, Safer Care Victoria partners with health services to implement evidence-based strategies that help more babies reach full term - because every week counts.
