  • Girls dig deep into STEM at Victorian Tunnelling Centre. More than 40 girls from three Melbourne secondary schools got a hands-on taste of the infrastructure industry at the Big Build Girls Industry Immersion Day, held at the Victorian Tunnelling Centre (VTC) in Chadstone on 4 September. In partnership with Monash Tech School, Holmesglen, Suburban Rail Loop Authority, Suburban Connect, our Capability Team within VIDA guided students around the facility and answered their questions, while showcasing the breadth of STEM careers through a series of interactive activities. Students from Highvale, Mount Waverley and Wellington Secondary Colleges explored the centre’s state-of-the-art facilities, taking part in experiences such as: • operating a mini excavator under supervision • using VR technology to extinguish a fire • navigating an excavator simulator to move materials • rescue in the SEM (Sequential Excavation Method), one of the techniques used in tunnelling. Highlights from the day were a career pathways panel hosted by VIDA featuring Annabel Quinlivan and Nicola Aligianis (Suburban Rail Loop Authority) and Hayley Jiang (Suburban Connect). The speakers encouraged students to stay open-minded, build networks, and seize opportunities – advice that resonated strongly with the audience. Students were also inspired to learn about an all-female crew working on the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the Suburban Rail Loop project, due to commence next year, demonstrating that women can and do succeed in these roles. To cap off the day, each student was awarded a Digital Badge, recognising the activities they participated in and the collaboration of organisations involved. These badges can be used to showcase their experiences and interest in STEM when applying for future study, training, or job opportunities. Feedback showed that the program had a strong impact, with: • 89% learning about industries that use STEM • 40% were more likely to consider a STEM career after the event • 83% rated the program as interesting and enjoyable. The results confirm the value of immersive, real-world experiences in sparking students’ interest in STEM and infrastructure careers.
