Comment le pouvoir politique fut-il mobilisé pour faciliter le progrès social? Comment une nouvelle culture de l’inventivité émergea-t-elle de l’application de précédents architecturaux? Voilà quelques-unes des nombreuses questions qui émergent de notre nouveau livre How Modern: Biographies of Architecture in China 1949–1979, créé sous la direction de Shirley Surya, Li Hua et Victoria Addona, et co-publié avec M BOOKS. Conçu par Sonja Zagermann et imprimé par DZA Druckerei zu Altenburg GmbH, le livre remet en question une histoire monolithique de la modernité socialiste chinoise en mettant en avant les conditions variées dans lesquelles le modernisme a été conçu, réalisé et vécu sous trois thèmes : l’agentivité, l’industrie et le style. Designed by Sonja Zagermann and printed by DZA Druckerei zu Altenburg GmbH, the book challenges a monolithic history of Chinese socialist modernity by foregrounding the varied conditions under which modernism was conceived, realized, and experienced under three themes: agency, industry, and style. Le 20 novembre, le vernissage de Quelle Modernité : biographies de l’architecture en Chine 1949-1979, organisée en collaboration avec M+, Hong Kong, aura lieu au CCA. La commissaire de l’exposition Shirley Surya, Conservatrice Design et Architecture au M+, Hong Kong, présentera l’exposition, sa recherche et sa position curatoriale. Cette présentation sera suivie d’une discussion avec l’historienne de l’architecture à Southeast University, Nanjing et coéditrice de la publication, Li Hua, et l’artiste Wang Tuo Tuo, qui a réalisé de nouvelles œuvres dans le cadre de l’exposition et de la publication. L’appel à candidatures pour le Programme de bourse de design autochtone est désormais ouvert. Bénéficiant du généreux soutien de CCxA, KPMB Architects, NORR, Lateral Office Inc., Stantec, Drew Sinclair (SvN) et du CCA, la bourse est ouverte aux designers (architectes, urbanistes ou personnes qui s’identifient comme autochtones et qui interviennent de façon importante dans l’environnement bâti ou naturel) qui s’engagent dans des projets pouvant être mis en relation avec les initiatives actuelles du CCA tout en étant pertinents pour leurs communautés d’origine et/ou d’autres communautés avec lesquelles ils ont des liens de longue date. La Collection du CCA ne contient que très peu de matériel réalisé par des designers autochtones. L’ambition de la bourse est de permettre aux boursiers d’explorer cette absence et d’intervenir de manière qui pourrait être significative pour leurs pratiques et leurs communautés. Generously supported by de CCxA, KPMB Architects, NORR, Lateral Office Inc., Stantec, Drew Sinclair (SvN), and the CCA, this fellowship is open to designers (architects, urban planners, or individuals who self-identify as Indigenous and are making a substantial intervention in the built or natural environment) who engage in projects that can be put into conversation with current initiatives at the CCA while also holding relevance to their home communities and/or other communities to which they have long- standing ties. The CCA Collection holds minimal material authored by Indigenous designers. The ambition of this fellowship is for Indigenous fellows to probe this absence and to intervene in ways that could be meaningful to their practices and communities. Broadly, the aim of the fellowship is to share knowledge on how architecture needs to be a critically and socially engaged practice. Souple et informel, CCA c/o est une série d’initiatives temporaires implantées localement dans différentes villes du monde, un outil pour dévoiler les enjeux d’intérêt général qui émergent dans des contextes différents du nôtre, une stratégie visant à identifier de nouvelles explorations thématiques et à joindre de nouvelles perspectives aux conversations en cours, et CCA c/o se veut une transformation expérimentale du CCA. Organisée dans le cadre du programme CCA c/o Dakar qui, sous la direction de Nzinga B. Mboup, aborde l’architecture moderne Sénégalaise, Écosystèmes, matériaux de construction et cultures architecturales, est une discussion qui vise à placer les processus d’extraction et de transformation des matériaux au cœur des décisions architecturales. La conversation réunissant Nzinga B. Mboup, Neba Sere, George Massoud, Cyan Cheng, et Stephanie Idongesit Été aura lieu au The Africa Centre à Londres, le 6 novembre 2025. L’événement est gratuit, mais le nombre de place est limité. - Agile and informal, CCA c/o is a series of temporary initiatives that are locally anchored in different cities worldwide, a tool to reveal issues of general relevance that emerge from different contexts than our own, a strategy for defining new thematic explorations and adding new perspectives to ongoing conversations, and an experiment in transforming the CCA itself. Organized in the framework of the CCA c/o Dakar program curated by Nzinga B. Mboup and focusing on modernist Senegalese architecture, “Ecosystems, Building Materials, and Building Cultures” is a discussion that aims to place processes of extraction and transformation of materials at the heart of architectural decision-making. The talk reuniting Nzinga B. Mboup, Neba Sere, George Massoud, Cyan Cheng, and Stephanie Idongesit Ete will take place at The Africa Centre in London, on 6 November 2025. Créé en partenariat avec le Window Research Institute, le programme offre une résidence de recherche pouvant aller jusqu’à trois mois, au CCA à Montréal, sous le thème de « la vacance ». La date limite pour postuler est le 21 décembre 2025 à minuit (12 h, heure de l’Est). Cette bourse marque le coup d’envoi du deuxième cycle du programme. Le thème reflète le phénomène mondial croissant des terrains et bâtiments inutilisés, des espaces autrefois indispensables à la vie quotidienne qui ont perdu leur fonction en raison de changements économiques, du déclin démographique et de la délocalisation industrielle. Le programme vise à encourager la réflexion commune sur ces conditions et à explorer de nouvelles perspectives à travers un dialogue entre les boursiers. Jointly organized by the CCA and the Window Research Institute, the program offers a research residency of up to three months at the CCA in Montréal under the theme “Vacancy.” The application deadline is December 21, 2025 at midnight(12:00 a.m. EST). This fellowship marks the first call of the program’s second cycle. The theme reflects the growing global phenomenon of unused land and buildings—spaces once integral to daily life that have lost their function due to economic shifts, population decline, and industrial relocation. The program aims to foster shared inquiry into these conditions and to explore new perspectives through dialogue among fellows. Au cours des derniers mois, la librairie du CCA s’est déplacée afin de partager les plus récentes publications CCA ainsi qu’une sélection de livres et magazines d’architecture, d’urbanisme et de design édités ailleurs. Les 4 et 5 octobre derniers, notre librairie éphémère a fait une apparition à la huitième édition de Volume MTL , à une table partagée avec l'éditeur Valiz. Durant ce salon du livre d’art, une autre librairie éphémère du CCA, ouverte à tous et en partenariat avec Agence Spatiale, a ouvert ces portes à Québec. Cette dernière est présentement accessible au public du lundi au vendredi. Du 15 au 16 octobre, la deuxième édition de la librairie éphémère du CCA à l’Université Laval, en partenariat avec le Comité Culturel ÉAUL a eu lieu. La prochaine libraire éphémère du CCA se déroulera du 29 au 30 octobre 2025, au Evergreen Brick Works, à Toronto, dans le cadre de la conférence d’AZURE Media sur l'adaptation au changement climatique par le design. On October 4 and 5, our CCA Bookstore pop-up made an appearance at the eighth edition of Volume MTL, at a table shared with the publisher Valiz. As this art book fair unfolded, a second Bookstore pop-up, open to all and in partnership with Agence Spatiale, opened its doors in Quebec City. The latter is currently accessible to the public from Monday to Friday. From October 15 to 16, the second edition of the CCA Bookstore Pop-Up at Université Laval, in partnership with the Comité Culturel ÉAUL, unfolded. The next CCA Bookstore Pop-up will take place between 29 and 30 October, 2025, at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, as part of the AZURE Media conference on climate change adaptation through design. Le 18 octobre, notre commissaire émergente 2023-2024 Yutong Lin et la chercheure invitée Yan Zhou nous ont rejoint à la librairie du CCA pour une conversation autour de Zomia Garden, la plus récente publication de la série CCA Singles. Pour l’occasion, Lin et Zhou ont discuté de l’histoire botanique et coloniale de la région de Zomia, ainsi que de l’approche archivistique, artistique, éditoriale de Lin. La discussion a été animée par Victoria Addona, Rédactrice, Publications CCA. Dans Zomia Garden, Lin retrace l’héritage de l’exploration botanique dans une région de la chaîne de montagnes Himalaya-Hengduan connue sous le nom de Zomia, un terme introduit en 2002 pour désigner la plus grande région d’habitants non gouvernée par un État-nation. Dans le cadre de sa parution, le livre sera présenté, en présence de Yutong Lin, le 26 octobre à Nowhere Netherlands ( Nowhere.Netherlands ), à la Haye, et le 1 novembre à Common Imprint à Berlin. On this occasion, Lin and Zhou discussed botanical and colonial histories in the Zomia region as well as Lin’s intersecting archival, artistic, and editorial approach. The discussion was moderated by Victoria Addona, Editor, CCA Publications. As part of its release, the book will be presented, in the presence of Yutong Lin, on 16 October at Nowhere Netherlands ( Nowhere.Netherlands ), in the Netherlands, and on 1 November at Common Imprint in Berlin.
