👉 Igwe bụ ike. Unity is strength.
For one Raisineer, this phrase is part of her identity.
Meet Ijeoma Okeahialam, originally from Nigeria, she’s now CS Operations Manager at Raisin in Berlin, and this is her story.
😀 Where were you born and what shaped you?
I was born and raised in Nigeria, and currently live in Germany. I would say Nigeria is where my cultural foundation and identity came from. Germany has given me a whole new experience and opportunities to grow in different ways. So living in both places has shaped me.
🇩🇪 When did you move to Germany? Do you speak German?
I moved here in 2018 for my master’s degree. My goal was to go to a country where I could learn a new language. I also had an uncle who studied in Germany. And when we were young, he told us stories about his time here, which I always found interesting. With that on my mind, I looked forward to coming here one day. I speak German fairly well and I’m steadily improving through regular practice.
🤗 What makes you happy?
Staying connected to who I am, my identity and my faith as well. In Germany, I found great opportunities, the time to explore more diversity, and exposure to people from different walks of life. The ability to explore new cultures, especially here in Berlin and Germany as a whole, inspires me. This and just living a life where I feel balanced and proud contribute to my happiness.
🗺️ What's your favourite place here and why?
The Museum Island in Berlin is my favourite. It has such incredible art and history that visiting this place is so inspiring. It gives me an opportunity to think about what transpired in the past, and a peek into stories from around the world; some of them even have connections to our African heritage, which is particularly interesting to me. Walking through the galleries surrounded by centuries of human culture reminds me of the beauty of diversity and how history has shaped who we are today.
💬 Which proverb in your native language is your favourite?
We are known for many adages and proverbs, but this one stands out in my native language: Igwe bụ ike - Unity is strength. This comes from the African background where traditionally some works, like farming and building, were done collectively. This proverb emphasises that more can be achieved when people work together as a team – through collective effort, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas.
Thank you, Ijeoma.
