Haramaya University Successfully Implements Online Mid-Term Exams for First-Year Students Haramaya University has successfully conducted its first-ever online mid-term examinations for 3200 first-year students. The university has announced plans to continue utilizing this online system for the upcoming semester-end exams. This successful implementation of online mid-term exams demonstrates Haramaya University’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies to enhance the educational experience for its students while improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The Freshman Program Directorate, in collaboration with the University’s ICT Directorate, meticulously planned and executed the online examination system. Dr. Getachew Teshome, Director of the Freshman Program, emphasized the thorough preparations undertaken, including mock exams and training sessions for students to ensure a smooth and successful online examination experience. Dr. Milkyas Hailu, Director of the University’s ICT Directorate, highlighted the crucial role of ICT experts in training both online exam invigilators and students. He emphasized Haramaya University’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance the learning experience and foster innovative teaching methods. “As a higher education institution, Haramaya University recognizes the transformative power of information technology,” Dr. Milkyas stated. “We are dedicated to providing students and faculty with the necessary tools to thrive in the evolving academic landscape.” The successful online examination of 3200 students marks a significant milestone in the university’s “Digital Transformation” journey. Dr. Milkyas explained that online examinations not only enhance exam transparency but also allow students to utilize their time effectively and minimize the potential for cheating. Both directors noted the significant administrative and financial benefits of the online examination system. By eliminating the need for printing, distributing, and storing physical exam papers, the university has achieved considerable cost savings, estimated at 20 million Birr. Students, such as Kalid Nuredin and Kalkidan Teklay, expressed positive feedback. They commended the university’s preparation efforts, including mock exams and awareness training, which instilled confidence and alleviated any anxiety regarding the online examination process.
