Ok, you triggered me!
It may be an arcane rule but, it teaches us to work within set parameters – Having an unlimited amount of golf balls would mean we could be reckless, swing without care and not worry about the consequences of losing a ball (yes, losing a ball costs a couple of shots). I’m all for being reckless in the right circumstances but in the end, playing within the rules, no matter how arcane, gets us to where we need to be with integrity and fairness- both on and off the golf course. Golf is like life, it’s fun, (mostly), really hard and we make awesome friends.
This is one of my all-time favorite golf stories. 🙂 The USGA did a great documentary on the 2000 US Open about 6 years ago. There’s a segment that starts here where they break down this particular situation, including the story from his caddy’s perspective. Worth checking out!
