New Zealand’s largest specialist coal company.

About us

As New Zealand’s largest specialist coal company, we produce over 2.2 million tonnes of coal each year and proudly employ over 550 people. At Bathurst, we understand and accept the challenge of responsible mineral extraction and supply. We’re here to ensure our customers receive exactly what they want, when they need it. But we’re just as committed to protecting the unique environment we all share. An ASX-listed company, we began our New Zealand operations in 2011 and now have mining facilities in Southland, Canterbury, Waikato and the West Coast. In 2017, we expanded by forming a joint venture with Talley’s Energy and acquired three mines from the former state owned coal company, Solid Energy: Stockton (West Coast) Rotowaro (Waikato) Maramarua (Waikato) Helping fuel the growth of New Zealand Inc. Almost 75% of our production is used for steel making of which one third is used by a local Kiwi steel mill. Our high-quality, thermal-grade coals fuels are used to help drive the engines of many iconic South Island food and dairy businesses. Our Denniston and Stockton resources are well-known for their excellent quality. With low ash and high fluidity, these coals are highly sought after by international steelmakers and will form the basis of our upcoming export operations. We’re more than just a mining business. The world is constantly changing and so are we. Which is why we maintain a strong commitment to manage the social and environmental impacts of mining. As you’ll see, we take great care to look after our people, the communities we work in and the environment we all share.

  • Bathurst Resources is proud to be one of the sponsors of the newly opened Huntly Museum (Te Whare Taonga o Raahui Pookeka). Located in the beautifully restored 1939 railway station, the museum offers an immersive, interactive experience featuring over 18,000 community-contributed objects. As part of the celebration, some of our team and their families had the chance to visit the museum and we’ve captured a few special moments from their trip. We were priviledged to contribute to the historical content and local geological information as part of the displays. It was a meaningful reminder of the power of local history to bring people together. A huge thank you to the Waikato District Council and the Huntly Museum for their dedication to preserving and sharing the stories of this incredible community. If you're nearby, we highly recommend stopping in! #CommunityHeritage #HuntlyMuseum #BathurstResources #TeWhareTaonga #WaikatoHistory #ProudSponsor #FamilyMoments

  • Bathurst Resources is proud to showcase our commitment to technical excellence and environmental responsibility at the AusIMM New Zealand Branch 2025 Conference – Future Horizons. A further two presentations from our team highlighted the depth of expertise driving innovation across our operations: Ben Hyde, Senior Engineering Geologist at Stockton Mine, shared insights on “Stress-Strain Regime Changes Around the Mt William Fault and Its Implications for Highwall Stability.” His analysis of fault reactivation and complex structural settings at Stockton’s Cypress pit revealed how targeted drilling, radar monitoring, and adaptive slope design are critical to managing geotechnical risks and ensuring safe operations. A key takeaway from Ben’s presentation was: “Beware of kinky faults—they could be hiding something.” Shanae Talbot, North Island Environmental Technician for Rotowaro and Maramarua Mines, presented the Mangakotukutuku Stream Diversion Project, a model of environmental innovation. Designed to support indigenous biodiversity, the project featured a run-riffle-pool sequence and a robust Ecological and Fish Management Plan. Collaboration with local Iwi and the Waikato Regional Council ensured cultural and ecological values were respected throughout the project implementation and continue to be integrated in the post monitoring phase. We’re proud of Ben and Shanae for representing Bathurst with such professionalism and passion. Their work exemplifies how mining operations can balance development with environmental stewardship and safety-focused performance. #AusIMM25 #FutureHorizons #BathurstResources #EnvironmentalInnovation #EngineeringGeology #TechnicalExcellence

With World Meningitis Day approaching this Sunday October 5th, we wish to shine a light ✨on meningitis awareness by highlighting the important role that the Meningitis Foundation completes to increase education and awareness around the dangers of meningitis. Landmarks across NZ are lighting up purple on Sunday for meningitis 💜 Bathurst’s support has assisted in the development of a bilingual colouring book, "Te Pukapuka Kauruku Kiriuhi Uakakā, The Meningitis Foundation Colouring Book" both in Te Reo Māori and English to contribute an accurate and credible educational resource for parents, health professionals and community groups about meningitis. The success of the book has resulted in the recent addition of Samoan and Tongan language versions. Meningitis symptoms can look like many other common illnesses. Meningitis can strike fast, but with knowledge and timely care, it can be prevented or treated effectively. Learn about the symptoms using the QR code below.  We encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more, share resources, and support the Foundation’s important work. • Bathurst Resources is proud to celebrate the outstanding contributions of two team members who showcased the depth and diversity of our expertise at the AusIMM New Zealand Branch 2025 Conference – Future Horizons. Mohamed H., Mine Geologist at Maramarua Mine, presented on the strategic development of the M1 Pit Extension, a 16.3-hectare project mined in six stages to ensure uninterrupted coal supply. His presentation offered valuable insights into geological planning and operational execution, reinforcing Bathurst’s commitment to innovation and reliability in New Zealand’s mining sector. Hilary Cameron, Environmental Advisor at Stockton Mine, delivered an inspiring talk on integrating environmental planning into responsible mining. From managing rehabilitation of landscapes, securing legacy hazards to managing environment field worker safety, Hilary’s work showed environmental stewardship. A standout moment was her story of working with Petra, a conservation dog who with her handler Lynne Maguire (MBC Environmental Ltd) helps protect the great spotted kiwi/roroa population at Cypress pit, an incredible example of mining and conservation working hand in paw. Hilary, a trained Kiwi handler, and Mohamed were among five Bathurst team members who took the stage to share their technical expertise and passion for progress. Their presentations reflect the values we hold dear, innovation, responsibility, and connection to our community and environment. We’re proud to foster talent like Mohamed and Hilary, whose dedication and insight continue to shape the future horizons of mining in New Zealand. We’ll be sharing highlights from the other Bathurst speakers at the AusIMM conference in an upcoming post, stay tuned! #AusIMM25 #FutureHorizons #ResponsibleMining #MiningExcellence #EnvironmentalStewardship #MinePlanning #ConservationDogs

We were stoked to join community members, volunteers and sponsors yesterday at the newly rebuilt Glen Afton and Pukemiro Districts Community Hub yesterday evening. The previous space, built in 1949 and gutted by a fire in 2017, was a much-loved part of the community, and Hub members hope the new building will continue to be an integral part of this community for many years to come. Our Community Led Development Advisor, Lianne van den Bemd, says it’s been an honour to support and work side-by-side with volunteers as they worked on behalf of the Glen Afton and Pukemiro communities to continue the legacy of the former space. • Last week, we had the privilege of being a platinum sponsor at the AusIMM New Zealand Branch Annual Conference held in stunning Queenstown from 24–26 August 2025.   This year’s theme, Future Horizons, sparked insightful discussions around critical minerals, sustainability, innovation, and future workforce planning - topics that are shaping the tomorrow of our industry.   We were honored to hear from distinguished speakers including The Hon Shane Jones, Minister for Resources and Associate Minister for Energy and Simon Court, Under-Secretary to Minister for Infrastructure and Resource Management Reform. Richard Tacon, our Bathurst CEO also spoke providing company strategic plan and operational performance updates.    A special highlight was seeing five further team members take the stage to share their technical work and valuable perspectives. Their contributions truly showcased our commitment to responsible mining and environmental stewardship.   There was an amazing turnout of over 35 students from four universities who attended the conference with Ausimm support, seeking out general knowledge on the industry and canvassing future job prospects. It is a privilege to be part of an industry that is actively engaging in the conversations that matter most for our collective future.   #AusIMM #BathurstResources #FutureHorizons #Sustainability #CriticalMinerals #Innovation #MiningNZ
