The Rise of the Founding Designer 🔥 Something has changed in the last few years. You see it in the cap tables: designers with real equity, joining at single-digit employee numbers. Not as the person who makes the logo. As a founder. This would have seemed odd in 2010. Back then, startups had founding engineers and maybe a business co-founder. Designers came later, after product-market fit, after the Series A. They were hired, not founding. Now some of the most successful startups have designers in the founding team. And it’s not a coincidence. What Changed: The obvious answer is that design matters more now. Products are more competitive, users are more sophisticated, the bar for “good enough” has risen. All true, but not the real reason. The real reason is that the nature of product differentiation has changed. In the early 2000s, if you could build something that worked at all, you had a shot. Just getting the technology to function was hard enough that execution barriers protected you. If you built a web app that didn’t crash, you were ahead of most people. Now everyone can build. The tools are better, the knowledge is distributed, there’s an open source library for everything. Technical execution alone doesn’t protect you anymore. So what does? How users feel about your product. Whether they understand it. Whether it fits into their mental model of how things should work. These aren’t secondary concerns anymore. They’re primary. And that’s what designers are trained to think about. The Founding Designer Advantage: When a designer is there from day one, something interesting happens. The product doesn’t just look different. It’s conceived differently. A founding designer doesn’t arrive to a spec and make it pretty. They’re in the room when you’re deciding what to build. They’re asking “why would someone do this?” before you write any code. They’re thinking about the user’s mental model while you’re thinking about the data model. This isn’t the same as having a designer you hire early. There’s a psychological difference between someone who joins a company and someone who co-creates it. Founding designers have the standing to push back. They can say “this entire feature is solving the wrong problem” without it being a career-limiting move. I’ve seen founding teams with designers make better architectural decisions. Not because designers understand databases, but because they won’t let you build something users won’t comprehend. That constraint forces clarity. The Pattern: Here’s what I notice in startups with founding designers: the product does fewer things, but each thing makes more sense. In the last 3 weeks, we've made 15+ product updates to Lovable. Here are some highlights: 1. MCP servers connect Lovable to your work tools. Pull in PRDs, tickets, and wireframes directly from Jira, Confluence, Notion, Linear, and n8n. n8n workflows integrate with 400+ apps like Salesforce, Slack, and Google Sheets. 2. The new Design view provides a dedicated panel where you can switch between your project's design tools. Includes Visual edits, Themes, and AI image generation. 3. Themes: Set your brand standards once—colors, typography, spacing. Apply them to any project. Preview before applying. 4. All new Visual edits: Edit text in elements with mixed content, like buttons containing both text and icons. Select and edit multiple elements at once. Adjust margins, padding, borders, shadows, colors, icons. Update or generate images with AI. 5. AI-powered image generation: Generate custom images by describing what you want. Create original visuals without leaving Lovable. Doesn't consume Lovable credits. 6. Privacy by default: All plans now include workspace-only projects (enabled by default). This means your projects are private to your workspace by default and only become public when you choose to change their visibility or publish your app to the world. 7. Shopify integration improvements: Connect your existing Shopify store to Lovable. Only the user who connected the store has write access. Collaborators maintain read-only access to Shopify data but can still fully build the storefront. 8. Gemini 3 Pro & image generation support: Lovable AI now supports Google's latest models including Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro. Full changelog: docs.lovable.dev/changelog

Welcoming Ryan Meadows to lead everything GTM at Lovable. In addition to being a founder, Ryan has spent most of his career building and scaling large revenue organizations. He's taken teams at HubSpot and Klaviyo from early traction to an extremely efficient GTM machine, set up the systems needed for repeatable growth, and understands the operational discipline required to scale a global company. Ryan will lead GTM and build the revenue engine around the product millions of people use. Most importantly, he cares deeply about delivering a Lovable experience to each and every customer and partner. We're building a once-in-a-generation company. The stakes are high, the work is difficult, and the pace is intense. Ryan will help us reach the next level. We're lucky to have him on the team. P.S. We're hiring across the board as we scale globally: lovable.dev/careers

  • Last week we celebrated Lovable's first birthday. What started as a small demo has grown into millions of people building tools, projects, and businesses every day. Side projects that became startups, kids coding their first app, founders shipping faster. To celebrate, we threw a party for the people who made this year possible. Our partners, investors, early believers, and everyone building with us. You've shaped Lovable into something more than a product. Year two is going to be special.

Prompt hacks for premium UI 🚀 Design hacks from building 100+ Lovable projects. Here are the 8 things that make the biggest difference: 𝟭/ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Tell Lovable exactly what you’re building. Keep it high-level but outcome-driven. Example: “Design a mobile-first habit app for busy creatives.” 𝟮/ 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 & 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 Use emotional language to set the tone. Example: “Ultra-modern, calm, tactile. Crafted by an award-winning designer. Smooth micro-interactions.” This massively shapes the output. 𝟯/ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 Most AI UIs break because the foundation is random. Set global rules upfront: • Spacing: 8pt • Radius: 20px • Type scale: xs / sm / base / lg / xl • Layout: flex-first, responsive • Visual language: [your style of choice] 𝟰/ 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗸𝘁𝗼𝗽-𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 Don’t let AI guess. “Mobile-first” or “Desktop-first” should appear in the first line of your prompt. 𝟱/ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 Buttons, cards, inputs, modals → build your reusable pieces first. You’ll get way more consistency and way less chaos. 𝟲/ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 Tell Lovable what to reuse: “Use the same layout as Dashboard.tsx but replace chart → table.” You’re extending a design system, not reinventing screens. 𝟳/ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅 Premium UIs are fluid. Avoid absolute pixel widths. Use responsive, “w-full flex” logic wherever possible. 𝟴/ 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 Fonts, colors, spacing, shadows, corner radii. Define them!! Example: “Font: DM Sans, medium. Tracking: -2. Line height: 1.4. Primary: Soft Purple #7A5FFF. Dark mode preferred.” 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 “Design a mobile-first habit app for busy creatives. Make it feel ultra-modern, tactile, and crafted by an award-winning designer with delightful microinteractions. Global System: 8pt spacing, 20px radius, Inter type scale (xs–xl), flex-first layout, dark mode. Use shadcn/ui with subtle shadows, generous padding, and large rounded corners (2xl). Start by defining core components (buttons, cards, inputs, modals). Then create the dashboard with a progress ring, daily streak, and an animated task timeline.” 𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 • Treat your prompt like a sketch, then iterate. • Think in flows, not features. • Use emotional language to guide the feel. • Reuse patterns to build consistency. If you try this, share what you build. I’d love to see what comes out of it.
