Melbourne, your Metro Tunnel is open 🚆
The Metro Tunnel has arrived - redefining Melbourne's connectivity. 🚆 The Metro Tunnel Project is the biggest-ever public transport infrastructure project in the State of Victoria’s history. Today heralds the official opening of its five new underground stations: Arden at North Melbourne, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac at St Kilda Road Junction, with the first ever connection between the Melbourne tram and rail network. The architecture of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel integrates a line-wide approach, creating enduring landmarks, distinctive and beautiful station interiors and buildings and their surrounds that Melburnians will embrace with pride for generations to come. The stations foster a tangible connection to the streets and iconic landmarks of their respective locations, ensuring that commuters remain intrinsically linked to the vibrant city above. A key design principle of the stations is the integration of natural light and fresh air, fostering a sense of openness and wellbeing for commuters. “Melbourne is a city defined by its openness: its streets, laneways and public spaces create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere," says Rob Naybour, Chair of WW+P. "We wanted that openness to shape the design of the new stations; each station design maximises natural light and fresh air, creating passenger spaces that are truly world-class. "Our focus on connection and visibility ensures travellers feel part of the flow of the city – the stations are not just places of travel, but seamless extensions of Melbourne’s public realm." Stay tuned to hear more about each station! 💫 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eABjM4NN The design for Melbourne’s five new Metro Tunnel stations is a world-class collaboration between leading international design practices Hassell, WW+P, and in collaboration with RSHP, as part of the CYP joint venture. 📷: Peter Bennetts WW+P, part of 10N Collective | #melbourne #metrotunnel #metrotunnelproject #architecture

Today we look back at our proposed scheme for a High Speed Hub for HS2 in the East Midlands. A multimodal hub that met the local context with respect, and emphasised our core values: 🤝 People-focused: conceived as a people-centric gateway, a place where high-speed rail, Network Rail, local transport and the Nottingham tram links converge to connect Derby, Nottingham and Leicester and beyond. The project prioritises accessibility, step-free interchange and clear circulation, ensuring that every journey is intuitive and inclusive. Public forecourts, pedestrian paths, and waiting areas are arranged to feel welcoming, promoting social interaction and reinforcing the station as a unifying regional landmark. 💡 Inventive: the station featured four high-speed platforms, four conventional platforms, and two non-stopping high-speed through lines. The concourse elevated above the tracks to create a dynamic, layered experience, while intermodal forecourts integrate trams, buses, taxis, and drop-off zones. The design supports future growth, enabling the interchange to evolve as travel patterns and technologies change. 🌎 Responsible: repurposing existing railway sidings, the project makes efficient use of land, minimising car dependency and emphasising public transport and pedestrian access over excessive road access. Sensitive integration with surrounding green infrastructure and local planning ensures the Hub supports regional regeneration while respecting environmental constraints. We’ve been proud to support the Tideway London project since collaborating with Mott MacDonald and the Costain Vinci Bachy JV on their successful tender back in 2014, so it was a pleasure to see Director and Project Lead Steve Bell return to the Earl Pumping Station site recently for its official opening by Dr Sunny Lambe. Author. FCIM. FIIM. FRSA. MBA. Mayor of Southwark. Much of Tideway’s transformative work lies deep below ground, so the points where it meets the public realm are especially meaningful. At Earl Pumping Station, this moment is marked by a striking integrated artwork by Lubna Chowdhury, whose bold design draws on the site’s maritime heritage from scrimshaw engravings and whale-like markings, to the movement of river and sea. Realising this piece within the shaft cladding was a true team effort between the artist, ourselves, Mott MacDonald, Tideway, CVB and the fabricators, a wonderful example of art, architecture and engineering working seamlessly together. Since operations began in late 2024, Tideway has already intercepted over 5.5 million tonnes of sewage that would otherwise have entered the Thames; a lasting improvement to the health of London’s river. Projects like this embody the kind of city-shaping work we have been proud to deliver for over 40 years and continue to do so today. A milestone moment for Australia’s transport future as Infrastructure Australia has endorsed the first stage of the national high-speed rail network between Sydney and Newcastle. We're proud to have lead the architecture for the business case for the High Speed Rail Authority (Australia), helping shape the vision for faster, cleaner and better-connected cities and regions. High-speed rail isn’t just about moving people it's about unlocking opportunity, driving sustainable growth and re-shaping travel in Australia to deliver a more equitable future for all. The business case for high speed rail from Newcastle to Sydney, via the Central Coast, has been approved by the federal government's independent assessment body >> https://lnkd.in/gYFvEMSU What's being proposed is a 194km link, mostly in tunnels, with stops at six stations - Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast, Sydney Central, Parramatta and Western Sydney Airport. The first stage of the project would include four stations: Broadmeadow Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Central Coast to be delivered by 2037, followed by Central Sydney in 2039, and Western Sydney Airport via Parramatta by 2042. Construction would kick off in 2027, with completion by 2042 - as the first stage of a national high-speed rail network for Australia. With this evaluation report from Infrastructure Australia, the project now has support for the development phase of the project — a two-year period to engage with contractors and confirm at least 40% of the design. Read the Business Case Evaluation Report >> https://lnkd.in/ghXQzZPh We've long backed this truly city and nation shaping project, which would provide better connections across the region allowing Sydney to work like a bigger global city, with more economic gravitational pull.
