About us

The City of San Leandro is one of the most diverse cities in the nation located at the center of the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area. With a vibrant community of more than 89,000 residents, San Leandro is proud of its well-maintained neighborhoods, excellent public libraries, twenty-one public parks, quality local schools, and a wide range of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. The City also encompasses a large industrial area that is home to a thriving advanced manufacturing industry. San Leandro is also well-known for its quiet, well-defined neighborhoods full of charming and unique older houses on tree-lined streets where residents are proud of both their neighborhoods and their City. This is reflected by their active involvement in the City's numerous neighborhood and homeowner's associations. The ideal temperate makes San Leandro an excellent place for outdoor recreation. San Leandro boasts of its 450-berth Marina and two golf courses, and with an average temperature of 62 degrees and average rainfall of 19 inches per year, outdoor activity is possible all year.

  • Library Staff Receive Fire Safety & Hands-Only CPR Training This month, Library staff received fire extinguisher and hands-only CPR training from the Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD). This hands-on training strengthens staff readiness for real-life emergencies and reflects the strong partnership between the City of San Leandro and ACFD. For residents, this means the Library is not only a place to explore books and programs, it’s also staffed by team members who are better prepared to respond during critical moments. Whether assisting a patron in need or helping during an unexpected incident, our Library staff are building skills that support a safer, more resilient community. Thank you to ACFD for providing this valuable training and for helping us keep our public spaces safe.

  • On Saturday, November 8, Resilience Network member Friends of the San Leandro Creek hosted a “Creek Restoration Day” at Chabot Park, in partnership with the City of San Leandro. The three-hour event drew 75 volunteers who helped reintroduce 70 native plants — including 13 different species — to their natural habitat in the San Leandro Creek. We’d like to give a special shout-out to volunteers from EarthTeam, Bishop O’Dowd, and all the community members who rolled up their sleeves and made this happen! Want to help keep San Leandro thriving? Join our city’s sustainability efforts by exploring the San Leandro Resilience Network and finding a hub near you. Together, we can build a more connected, climate-ready community. Learn more at sanleandro.org/resilience

  • On Saturday, November 15, Homegrown Habitats San Leandro hosted “Fall Planting 101” at the Manor Branch Library, in partnership with the City of San Leandro’s Resilience Network. Nearly 30 residents joined this hands-on, pop-up–style workshop focused on gardening with California native plants, complete with a giveaway of native plant starts and seeds. Guests explored info tables on the ecological value of native plants, tips for sheet-mulching and lawn removal, garden design basics, choosing the right native species, and techniques for growing plants from seed. Participants left inspired, taking home native plant starts and more than 20 varieties of seeds harvested from members’ own gardens. With photo guides, plant information, and “shopping lists” to help choose their favorites, guests selected seeds at the outdoor “seed store” on the library patio—also home to Homegrown Habitats’ container demo garden. The event was a resounding success, full of positive energy, great conversations, and new community connections. Ready to deepen your own sustainability journey? • In this episode of San Leandro’s Resilience Network Series, we visit Tandi Family Farms, a unique resilience hub that weaves soil, food, and community into one living ecosystem. Founded by Andrea and Renata, Tandi Family Farms partners with local organizations to teach youth—and the community at large—how to grow, cook, and share healthy food while building a more resilient San Leandro. 🌱 At the LEAP Center, Executive Director Adesuwa Idehen shows how children of all abilities are learning teamwork, confidence, and social skills through hands-on gardening with Tandi Family Farms. 🥕 At the Boys & Girls Club, Tykia Clayborne, Teen Café Coordinator, leads a cooking class where kids harvest produce, prepare meals, and learn that resilience can start in their own backyard. Through these collaborations, Tandi Family Farms reminds us that resilience isn’t just about preparing for emergencies—it’s about growing stronger together, from the soil to the soul.
