At Aura, we spend a lot of time talking to kids about their tech use. Ask them if it feels healthy, and most say no. So why are they still glued to their devices? I sat down with Aliza Pressman, Ph.D., on Raising Good Humans to dig into that. With the holidays coming up and a lot of kids about to unwrap new tech, we got into what’s actually happening online, how kids are using AI, and why so much of it slips past parents. We also talked about Aura’s new partnership with Common Sense Media, built around a simple truth Jim Steyer and I truly believe in: this is hard, and parents deserve backup. Thanks for having me, Aliza. Tune in for how to handle that new-device moment this holiday: https://lnkd.in/erthi4aE

📢 Friday Podcast 📢 In this engaging episode of our "Flipp The Script" podcast, FlippGen Digital Rebel hosts Paddy Crump, Eden Byrne, and Allegra Cuomo welcome Merve Lapus, VP of Education Outreach and Engagement at Common Sense Media UK. The conversation delves into the evolution of digital literacy and safety, highlighting how youth habits have shifted from passive consumption to active creation in the digital world. Merve shares insights on empowering young people to navigate the digital landscape with agency and critical thinking, moving beyond mere content blocking to fostering informed digital citizenship. The discussion also explores the role of schools in integrating student voices into digital education programmes, emphasising the importance of advisory boards and real decision-making power for students. Merve advocates for reverse mentorship programs where students educate teachers about digital culture, fostering a collaborative learning environment. The conversation covers strategies for educators to navigate the rapidly evolving digital tools while maintaining core teaching values. Merve also highlights the importance of community initiatives like Digital Citizenship Week, which engage students, educators, and policymakers in meaningful discussions about digital footprints and media literacy. Such a brilliant conversation reflecting on the role of young people in driving digital wellbeing norms and the need for policies that centre youth voices in digital regulation. A huge thank you to Merve for taking the time to chat with us, and continuing the amazing work you all do at Common Sense Media! Today Common Sense Media released findings from our comprehensive risk assessment of AI chatbots and teen mental health support. The results are clear: these systems are fundamentally unsafe for the way millions of young people are already using them. While companies have made some progress on guardrails around suicide and self harm, our testing revealed systematic failures across the full spectrum of mental health conditions affecting young people, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, mania, and psychosis. The very design features that make chatbots engaging (memory, follow-up questions, 24/7 availability) become dangerous when teens turn to them for emotional support. This research wouldn't have been possible without our partners at Brainstorm: The Stanford Lab for Mental Health Innovation (Dr. Nina Vasan, MD, MBA and Dr. Darja Djordjevic MD PhD) and the dedicated work of our team who conducted rigorous testing across all major platforms, especially Bianca DeJesus, Tracy Pizzo Frey, and Hadley Dixon, M.S.
