Reimagining scalable solutions to end unsheltered homelessness

About us

DignityMoves is an innovative nonprofit organization that is reimagining scalable solutions to unsheltered homelessness. In partnership with cities, supportive services agencies and private stakeholders, DignityMoves rapidly builds cost-effective interim supportive housing communities. Utilizing unused land, relocatable prefabricated units and emergency building provisions, the organization empowers municipalities to address the homelessness epidemic with appropriate urgency. DignityMoves is also committed to driving systemic change through impactful policy and advocacy, in collaboration with lawmakers and community leaders to build an ecosystem that supports the growth of interim supportive housing as a powerful tool in ending unsheltered homelessness. Progress is taking shape in San Luis Obispo! The latest units have arrived at Welcome Home Village as construction on the supportive housing community continues. The 3D-printed tiny homes from Azure Printed Homes, built using recycled plastic and designed for durability and speed, are transforming the site. Thank you to all our partners and supporters. More updates to come as construction moves forward; this is what progress toward ending street homelessness looks like! 🙏

  • We’re honored to share a conversation with John A. Sobrato, one of Silicon Valley’s most influential philanthropists and a longtime champion for housing justice. In our conversation, John reflects on how decades of work in real estate and philanthropy through The Sobrato Organization and Sobrato Philanthropies have shaped his belief that housing is a human right and the foundation for dignity, health, and opportunity. He speaks candidly about the scale of the housing crisis in our region, the urgent need to bring people indoors quickly, and why interim supportive housing must be a core part of California’s response to street homelessness. John has played a catalytic role in expanding interim housing across San José, including with DignityMoves at our Via del Oro, Cherry Avenue, and Salvation Army communities. His commitment to collaboration across sectors continues to accelerate real solutions at a moment when they are needed most. We are deeply grateful for John’s leadership and partnership, and for his belief that when we align our resources and act boldly together, we can create a future where every person has a safe and stable place to call home. 👉 Read the Full Profile Here: https://lnkd.in/eUmVSW6X

A huge thank you to the team at JPMorganChase for hosting their "Gift of Warmth" drive to support residents moving into DignityMoves communities in San José and across Silicon Valley. The team set a goal to assemble 100 Welcome Home baskets, and they didn't just meet the goal — they more than doubled it, creating over 200 baskets filled with essentials like shampoo, deodorant, shaving supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and thoughtful welcome home notes. These baskets help residents feel at home from the moment they walk in the door. Thank you to the incredible team at JPMorgan Chase for your generosity, teamwork, and commitment to community impact. With your support, we're helping hundreds of residents in transition from living on the streets to a path of stability. 🙏 💙

  • Earlier this month, our COO, Freya Estreller, joined leaders from across California at the Small-Scale Housing Summit hosted by Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento to discuss one of the most urgent challenges facing communities today: how to scale dignified, cost-effective housing solutions quickly. Freya spoke on the panel, “Expanding the Housing Possibilities in Orange County,” alongside partners from Azure Printed Homes and Gensler, highlighting how interim supportive housing offers people experiencing homelessness a compelling alternative to living on the street and communities a fast, scalable solution to the crisis. The summit brought together policymakers, funders, developers, landowners, service providers, and innovators, all united by a shared goal: building housing solutions that meet the moment. We’re grateful to our partners across the state and eager to keep the conversation going. If you’re exploring modular or interim housing solutions in your community, we’d love to connect! 👉 hello@dignitymoves.org

Monday, we celebrated the grand opening; today, we’re taking in the view. From this angle, you can see the whole picture: Cherry Avenue is now a vibrant, thoughtfully designed community where 130+ residents will soon find safety, privacy, and a path forward. Every element of this site reflects trauma-informed design. These details matter, and they help residents feel safe enough to begin rebuilding. Interim supportive housing is gaining momentum across California because it meets people where they are, bringing them indoors fast, cost-effectively, and at scale. 📸 cr: Chris Mastrodicasa, City of San Jose

  • Today, we celebrated the Cherry Avenue interim housing community in San José, a place designed to offer safety, dignity, and a path forward for our neighbors moving off the streets. This milestone was made possible through the leadership and partnership of so many: the City of San José, Mayor Matt Mahan, Vice Mayor Pam Foley, John Sobrato, Good Samaritan Hospital - San Jose, CA, Valley Water, HomeFirst, Gensler, Swinerton, BOSS - Built On Site Systems, and the many public, private, and philanthropic partners who helped bring this community to life. And to the volunteers, families, and community members who spent the past three days furnishing rooms and adding personal touches, thank you. You helped create spaces that truly feel like home. Today is a reminder of what’s possible when we work together: more stability, more hope, more people indoors. Welcome home, Cherry Avenue. 🏠💙

Today, we celebrate the opening of the 128-unit Cherry Avenue interim housing community, the newest site to open this year as we work to double our interim housing capacity. This site will provide unhoused residents with supportive services to help them stabilize their lives and work toward self-sufficiency. Thank you to the donors and project partners that helped make this project possible. DignityMoves BKF Engineers Swinerton HomeFirst Gensler

  • Today and every day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have served our country, and remain committed to ensuring every veteran has a safe place to call home. According to the most recent HUD data, more than 13,800 veterans are experiencing street homelessness in the U.S. on a given night, a reminder of both the urgency and the possibility of meaningful change. We are proud to partner on the San Bernardino Community Wellness Campus, which will include dedicated housing and supportive services for veterans, providing stability, privacy, and a path out of street homelessness. Ending street homelessness for veterans is not only possible, it’s urgent. Every veteran deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to rebuild. To all who have served: thank you. #VeteransDay #ThankYou #EndHomelessness
