  • The FDNY Foundation wishes you and your loved ones a Happy, Healthy, and Safe Thanksgiving. We are forever grateful for our FDNY firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics and their extraordinary work saving lives and protecting property in New York City. Thank you for your generous support of FDNY members as we continue to help fund training, equipment and education for our first responders and fire and life safety programs throughout the City. Here are some #FDNYSmart safety tips to remember this Thanksgiving: ➡️ Most fires in the home start in the kitchen. Don’t leave cooking food unattended. ➡️Stand by your pan and turn your handles in. ➡️Wear short or tight-fitting sleeves. Long sleeves are more likely to catch on fire or get caught on pot handles. ➡️Keep the area around the stove clear of towels, papers, potholders and anything that can burn. ➡️Treat burns immediately with cool running water. ➡️Have a working smoke/CO alarm https://lnkd.in/eH5Gy6Yi

Firefighter Derrick Henderson moved to East New York from California just before high school to take care of his sick grandmother. Just a day before he started at the Captain Vernon A. Richard High School for Fire and Life Safety, his father died. The death of his father and a number of other challenges made focusing on his future difficult. He had plans to drop out but credits the staff at the high school for inspiring him to follow his dreams.   In 2012, he became an FDNY EMT. He continues to serve his City as a Firefighter at Engine 26 in Midtown.    On Tuesday, Robin Hood honored Derrick as part of its 2025 Robin Hood Heroes Breakfast.

Robin Hood's Heroes Breakfast was a reminder of why I love this city. Every year, we honor New Yorkers who have faced unimaginable obstacles — and, with the support of extraordinary nonprofit partners, turned those challenges into momentum. This year’s heroes — Derrick, Wendy, and Jaylen — reflect the very best of New York. Their stories are different, but they share a powerful throughline: resilience, opportunity, and the organizations that stood with them. 🔹 Derrick, supported by the FDNY Foundation, found a path from near dropout to firefighter at Engine 26 — living proof of what’s possible when young people get structure and a second chance. 🔹 Wendy, a remarkable NYC principal, has helped transform literacy and math outcomes at P.S. 132 through her partnership with Teaching Matters. 🔹 Jaylen, the first-ever client of Anthos|Home, moved from years of housing instability to a permanent home where she’s raising her son and finishing her degree. These are not just individual triumphs — they are examples of what happens when New York invests in the potential of its people. To our honorees — FDNY Foundation, Teaching Matters, and Anthos|Home — thank you for showing what partnership and purpose can make possible. And to our Heroes: thank you for reminding us what courage looks like in this city. New York is filled with Heroes like you.

Friends, family and thousands of FDNY members gathered to say their final goodbyes to Lieutenant Patrick D. Brady. Brady spent 11 years with our great Department and died while helping to save others. Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker posthumously promoted Brady at his funeral Saturday. Lieutenant Brady was operating on the roof of an all-hands fire at 9407 Kings Highway in Brooklyn when he suffered a medical episode and went into cardiac arrest. He was immediately treated by fellow FDNY Firefighters and FDNY EMS. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he died. We will never forget Lieutenant Patrick Brady.
