Nearly 140 students from UMass Boston had the opportunity to meet with #AEC professionals and explore what it’s like to work in the industry during an October poster session—the first of the school year. Teaming up with Professional Women in Construction Boston Chapter and several industry partners, more than a dozen local experts connected with students to discuss various career disciplines across the architecture, engineering and construction industry. Our team was deeply energized by the opportunity to open a window into our world and pass on insights that will help shape the next generation of industry leaders. A special thank you to the UMass Boston team for hosting us, and to our partners and staff for preparing, greeting, and showcasing posters about their career disciplines and personal journeys, as well as supporting the event: • Architecture and Interior Design: Shepley Bulfinch – Andrea Valencia, Traci Crugnale • Owner’s Project Management: Northstar Project & Real Estate Services – Dominic Caporale and Cameron Feeley • Construction Management: BOND Building Construction – Destiny Fausta and Peter Maggio • Electrical and Mechanical Engineering: RMF Engineering, Inc. – Gretchen Battle, PE • Civil Engineering: Beals and Thomas, Inc. – Robert Kennedy, EIT • Geotechnical/Environmental Engineering: Haley & Aldrich – Brittany Rosenberg, Marina Vilanova • Structural Engineering: Thornton Tomasetti – Jonathan Rivera, Ph.D., S.E. A new feature this semester: resource booths that provide students with the tools and information to help them pursue careers in AEC. Thanks to International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), Dawn Borden, and Lorenzo Nicosia from AvalonBay Communities for opening potential next steps for interested students. Other amazing helpers who made this event a success: Christopher De La Cruz (UMass Boston); Meghana Tigulla (Northeastern University), Melissa Dixon, Katherine Merrill, Kelvin Wong, P.E., Lysandra Reed, PE, and Michelle Holt Special thanks to our ever-ready partner Lily Hamel and Kirkwood for printing the posters!

Our own Jeremy Haugh, P.E., visited a classroom at Greenwich Country Day School to give students an inside look at how buildings come to life—from initial concept to design and ultimately construction. He introduced them to subsurface investigations, soil sampling, and rock coring techniques.
As digging for the new performing arts center continues at the GCDS Upper School, students had the rare opportunity to meet a geotechnical engineer overseeing the project that will bring theater, dance, music, creativity and the broader community to Stanwich Road. Jeremy Haugh, P.E., a program manager and geotechnical engineer with Haley & Aldrich, stepped off the worksite and into the classroom to give a snapshot of how buildings become part of our environment, starting from concept to design and finally construction. Mr. Haugh also offered a first-hand look into the subsurface investigations, soil sampling and rock coring techniques that are essential steps before drawing blueprints. The Amanda Gesine Winklevoss '94 Performing Arts Center is slated to open in 2027!

Thanks for the 2025 Outstanding Project Award, Deep Foundations Institute! It’s an honor to receive this recognition for our #geotechnical work on Lyrik Back Bay at Air Rights Parcel 12, the first air rights project in 40 years to be completed over the Mass Pike in Boston. H&A’s Marya Gorczyca traveled to Nashville last week to present at a session and accept the award. Thanks also to Samuels & Associates, our many consulting partners, our specialty foundation contractors, and our dedicated team for making this project a success. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gbAuXTjx

One of H&A’s foundational safety behaviors is that we plan for the capacity to fail safely — which means we train for emergencies. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure to use if a person’s heart or breathing stops. We can all learn CPR in a basic first aid course. There are seven key steps: 1. Check the scene for safety. 2. Check for responsiveness. 3. If the person does not respond or is only gasping, call 911. 4. Place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface. 5. Give 30 chest compressions, hard and fast. 6. Give two breaths. 7. Continue giving sets of 30 compressions and two breaths.
