We're celebrating two recently opened HOK-designed hospitals earning recognition for their architecture and impact, Harborne Hospital in Birmingham, UK, and Bon Secours Hospital Limerick in Ireland. ✨ The Building Better Healthcare (BBH) Awards named The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham its silver place winner for Best Healthcare Development over £75 million. This new 17,760-sq.-m. Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) specialist facility is located on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) Campus—a busy healthcare hub that serves nearly 80,000 patients annually. Property Industry Excellence Awards named HOK and design partner Reddy Architecture + Urbanism winners of the 2025 Architecture Award for their work on Bon Secours Hospital Limerick. This facility, which began accepting patients in September, is the first large hospital to open in Ireland in almost 20 years. With capacity to care for 50,000 patients annually, the 23,050-sq.-m., 96-bed hospital addresses a gap in medical services for Limerick’s growing population. 🔗 Learn more, https://bit.ly/4imG3QJ 📸 Andrew Meredeth and Donal Murphy

How can architecture and design help organizations prepare for rising cyberthreats? That question shaped HOK’s work with the University of Ottawa and IBM on the new Cyber Range, a purpose-built environment that immerses students, researchers and industry partners in real-time cybersecurity simulations. Located within the university’s Cyber Hub, the 8,100-sq.-ft. facility includes a control room, simulation room and broadcast room designed to mirror the pace and pressure of active cyber events. Dynamic lighting, integrated digital displays and focused workstations support quick decisions, while flexible seating, hoteling areas and quiet rooms give users space to collaborate and regroup. By translating complex cyber workflows into an intuitive spatial experience, HOK created an interior that strengthens Canada’s cyber workforce and supports the next generation of digital defense. 📸 Adrien Williams 🔗 Discover more on hok.com: https://bit.ly/4odH1A6

We are thrilled to see Union Omaha and the City of Omaha announce a development agreement for a new professional soccer stadium and mixed-use district! The proposed new stadium would become a transformative downtown anchor, adding a walkable, vibrant and transit-oriented destination to the city’s core. The stadium will house Union Omaha—Nebraska’s premier professional soccer team and two-time USL League One champion—and house a future women’s professional team. The 20-acre district will include retail, dining, housing and green space. Pending final approval and financing, Union Omaha plans to break ground in 2026, with the stadium expected to be completed in time for the 2028 season. HOK is serving as design architect for the stadium with Hines serving as development lead. 🔗 Discover more: https://bit.ly/4rdrWBn

We're celebrating the ribbon cutting of three HOK-designed healthcare and justice facilities! Human-centered design is a common thread among the recently opened Miami-Dade Justice Center, Michigan Medicine Health Care Pavilion and soon-to-open City of Hope’s cancer specialty hospital in Irvine. Each was designed to support well-being in its respective city. 🔸Osvaldo N. Soto Miami-Dade Justice Center is a new 23-story courthouse replaced a nearly century-old facility that no longer supported the needs of Miami’s growing justice system. At 474 feet tall, the new 620,000-sq.-ft. facility is among the tallest government-use buildings in Miami and creates a new anchor to the downtown civic skyline. 🔸City of Hope's new hospital serves as the only cancer specialty hospital in Orange County. This 73-bed facility connects to City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center to expand comprehensive cancer care, research and clinical trials on the organization’s Irvine campus. 🔸U-M's Health D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story, 264-bed facility enabling Michigan Medicine’s largest increase in adult inpatient capacity in 40 years. The hospital advances the health system’s ability to provide specialized care, comprehensive medical training and research. 🔗 Learn more, https://bit.ly/4ooK0pH

Clinical trials are becoming a strategic differentiator for hospitals. In a recent article, HOK's Colleen E. Harrington, IIDA, and Kathleen Schwarz outline how “trial-ready” cancer hospitals embed clinical research into everyday care. They highlight how purposeful design and planning can streamline trial operations, support specialized staffing and infrastructure and expand equitable access for more patients. For hospital leaders considering capital investments, the article offers a great first look at how building design can accelerate innovation while delivering lasting organizational value. 🔗 Discover more: http://bit.ly/4nnVwAU

Roig Arena is redefining what a modern sports venue can be. As Nate Berg writes in Fast Company, "Roig Arena and its public amenities offer a refreshing take on a form of urban development that favors the “development” over the “urban.”" Designed by HOK and Valencia-based ERRE, the venue sits within a five-acre public plaza that includes green space, playgrounds, ball courts and a daily market hall, creating a civic destination that stays active far beyond game days. “As a designer, it’s rare that you get to introduce such significant public realm into a heritage city,” said John Rhodes, HOK design principal. 🔗 Read the full article: https://bit.ly/448SWI7

How can architects harness AI’s potential while maintaining the intentionality and critical thinking that defines great design? That’s but one question explored in our latest HOK Up Next. Featuring HOK's Loren Supp, Paul H. Harrison and University of Toronto's Humbi Song, moderated by Stephanie Miller, the panel conversation revealed both excitement and caution about AI’s role in shaping architecture’s future. Takeaways included: - The Promise and Peril of AI: AI expands creative possibility but also risks diminishing the reflection and critical thought at the heart of design. - AI’s Impact on Design Workflows: AI enhances the design process when used intentionally, supporting exploration, collaboration and new modes of making. - Architecture Education in the Age of AI: AI is reshaping architectural education, challenging how students learn, retain knowledge and develop foundational design skills. - Striking a Balance in AI Usage: Human intention must remain central, with AI used deliberately to augment—not replace—authorship, creativity and the human experience. 🔗 Discover more -- and watch a full recording of the 50-minute conversation -- in the article, https://bit.ly/4pdtPfC
