Non-profit Organizations

Building a more compassionate and equitable world through life-changing services and relentless advocacy.

About us

Born out of the AIDS crisis in New York City, Housing Works is a healing community that fights for inclusive care, social justice, and an end to homelessness. Our integrated healthcare, life-changing services, relentless advocacy, and social enterprises break barriers and involve the whole community in building a more compassionate and equitable world. Advocacy Housing Works fights for funding and legislation to ensure that all people living with HIV/AIDS have access to quality housing, healthcare, HIV prevention information and other life-sustaining services, as well as legal protection from stigma and discrimination. Housing Works is a grassroots organization committed to the use of non-violent civil disobedience in order to further our mission to end AIDS and homelessness. Services Since 1990, we have provided a comprehensive array of services to more than 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. Supportive services include but are not limited to housing, healthcare, meals and nutritional counseling, mental health and substance use treatment, job training, and legal assistance. Entrepreneurial Businesses Housing Works pioneered the concept of social enterprise–businesses whose profits fund the mission of a parent not-for-profit organization. This self-sustaining model provides employment opportunities to the community in addition to our fundraising efforts. Our businesses include Housing Works Thrift Shops and Housing Works Bookstore Cafe.

The Good Fight Comes Home to DOC NYC From Brooklyn to the big screen - and from heartbreak to hope. Four months ago, I shared the post below about our little film that could, and today, I can finally announce that our documentary short, The Good Fight: Armen vs. Giuliani, will have its world premiere at DOC NYC this November. To say this is a dream come true is an understatement; it honestly feels like I manifested this. The last line of that post read: “We haven’t had a theatrical screening yet, but we dream of making that happen right here in New York City.” And now, here we are premiering at the largest documentary festival in the U.S., an Oscar-qualifying one at that. About the Festival: DOC NYC is the largest documentary film festival in America, co-founded by Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen, two champions of nonfiction storytelling whose passion and vision have made this festival such a vital platform for filmmakers. This film began as a way to honor my friend Brian Bob, whom I lost two years ago. Armen, my neighbor and dear friend—and the heart of our film—lost his beloved mother,Haiganoush, and this year, I lost my beautiful mum, Esther. I am dedicating this film to those we’ve lost, and to the love and grief connections that bind us. With little to no budget, every person in our dream team poured their heart, time, and creativity into something we can all be proud of. Since that original post about the film, we’ve gone on to win 10 awards, but this will be our first theatrical screening. Amidst all this, news of the ceasefire has filled my heart with profound relief and renewed hope. May this moment remind us that light can break through, and that every fight for justice, dignity, and love matters. The Film: The documentary follows civil rights attorney Armen Merjian, whose decades-long work with Housing Works has transformed countless lives. From wrestling champion to legal warrior, Armen took on Mayor Giuliani in a landmark case and never stopped fighting for NYC’s most vulnerable. • We are BEYOND thrilled to announce that our very own Sasha Nutgent, VP of Cannabis, was celebrated in Crains 40 under 40! Sasha started her career at Housing Works as an Assistant Manager in the Thrift Shops, working her way up to manage a number of locations, include the flagship location in Chelsea. She also co-produced Design on a Dime Miami with the Development team before taking on the very first Cannabis retail manager role, and played an absolutely essential role in standing up our renowned and ground-breaking business. She has become the face and the voice of the NYC Cannabis Retail business. We couldn't be more proud!!! Here's the text of her profile: 40 Under 40 2025 Sasha Nutgent, 38 Vice president of Cannabis Retail, Housing Works Cannabis Co. Sasha Nutgent has spent her career in retail. Joining the staff of Housing Works in 2015 taught her how it feels not just to make a sale, but to change a life. Housing Works provides stable housing to homeless New Yorkers living with chronic health conditions such as HIV/AIDS. It operates businesses to fund its work, including a bookstore, thrift shops and, now, Housing Works Cannabis Co. During Housing Works Cannabis Co.’s first year in business, Nutgent helped serve over 300,000 customers and generate $24 million in sales. She’s most proud of having hired six people through a program called CREATE (Cannabis Reentry Employment Assistance & Training Experience), which partners with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. “They help people who are impacted by the war on drugs find positions inside the cannabis industry,” Nutgent said. "I think about the clients we serve and the many lives we are able to change through our organization. This empowers me to show up as the best version of myself." That every purchase at Housing Works Cannabis Co. supports the nonprofit’s efforts is another point of pride. “I really like that I'm working for the only charity dispensary in New York City, and that our proceeds go back into our overall mission at Housing Works,” she said. Despite the challenges of working in a relatively new industry with evolving rules and regulations, Nutgent is thrilled to be a pioneer: “We were the first to launch and the first to open in New York State … that was a really exciting time.” Prior to working in the industry, Nutgent said, she hadn’t realized how diverse cannabis users are. “One of the first sales that we did was to somebody who was in their 70s, and they were just so happy that we had somewhere safe and open where they could shop freely, and they didn't have to wait in a medical line or ask one of their friends to pick something up for them,” she said. “I didn’t expect that. I thought we'd have a much younger demographic, and it actually is quite the opposite.”

  • We are thrilled to announce that the Housing Works Clinical Learning Institute provided our behavioral health providers with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training and consultation this past year. Thanks to the expertise and exceptional facilitation of the Portland DBT Institute, we equipped our staff with advanced training in a renowned evidence-based practice, which is currently being translated into new DBT Skills groups for our clients. Additionally, this process enabled our NYSED licensed social workers to earn up to 36 continuing education contact hours, as Housing Works Inc. is an NYSED-approved Social Work Continuing Education Provider.

Housing Works Cannabis Co. made history as New York’s first legal cannabis dispensary — and they’ve been growing ever since. As a nonprofit supporting those affected by HIV, AIDS, and homelessness, launching a dispensary was a powerful way to give back to their mission. With BLAZE® powering their POS, e-commerce, and payments, they’ve expanded to 2 storefronts, launched delivery, and built a network of partner retailers — all with ease and stability they can count on. This is more than a cannabis success story — it’s purpose in action. 💚 #HousingWorks #CannabisWithPurpose #CannabisTech #NYCannabis

Housing Works is people. Housing Works values diversity. Housing Works takes care of our staff. These are just a few of the culture and value statements that empower the people who enact the mission of Housing Works day in and day out, and I had the pleasure of seeing it in action. This week, I was able to travel to New York to meet one of my valued nonprofit customers. Through our LinkedIn for Nonprofits business, I have had both the opportunity and the pleasure to partner with Nancy Chevalier, MPA since 2022, and I am always blown away at how passionate she is when she speaks about her team and the work that they do. Nancy is a fearless talent leader who takes a holistic approach to talent acquisition - one that says, "we hire good people because we serve good people." At Housing Works, their staff are the catalyst for the mission-driven change and impact provided to the most vulnerable communities in New York. And after just an hour with the team, I can say that Housing Works makes good on their promises. They take care of their staff, and that care is transferred to the communities that they serve. What a team! Thank you to Nancy & the team - Bene Morpeau, Farabi Osman, Paul Samuel Aviles, Jada Sanchez, SHRM-CP, Maritza Chavez - for embracing me (and my red cowboy boots 😉) and for showing me around. I am looking forward to our continued partnership and to more laughs and even more impact!
