One World, One Internet
About us
To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a nonprofit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It helps promote competition and develop policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN doesn’t control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internet’s naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.

A new blog from ICANN’s SSR Research team on a topic gaining attention in the DNS anti-abuse community: how to detect malicious bulk domain registrations using only public data. We analyse batch registered gTLD domains over the course of 2025, highlighting that “bad batches” aren’t randomly distributed — they concentrate within small numbers of registrar-nameserver groupings, linked to targeted campaigns. If you’re working on DNS abuse, threat intel, or registrar operations, share your feedback! #SpamHaus #Surbl #urlscan #netbeacon #ecrime2025 #PaloAlto #DNS Samaneh Tajalizadehkhoob, PhD Sion Lloyd

Africa’s Internet is growing fast, but much of its traffic still travels across continents before reaching users. That means slower speeds, higher costs, and missed opportunities. On average, only 41% of the most popular content in Africa is locally cached. Through the Coalition for Digital Africa, the Internet Society and partners are working to change that by keeping data where it belongs — closer to home.
