Our work in Hawai‘i is a powerful example of how community-rooted planning can center residents’ visions for economic development while protecting and strengthening community health, safety, and culture. Take a moment to read more and see LISC and The Brookings Institution’s community-centered economic inclusion framework in action: https://lnkd.in/e3krZBWJ
In the newest installment of Placemaking Postcards, in which guest authors highlight promising efforts to foster connected, vibrant, and inclusive communities, Andrew Aoki, Megan Inada, Rona Mangayayam, and Matt Hara write that Kalihi, Hawai’i is home to many ambitious development efforts, but residents have not been meaningfully included in the planning process. In response, several local organizations used a community-centered economic inclusion framework, co-developed by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and The Brookings Institution, to value both the process and outcomes needed to build community power during large-scale development projects. Kōkua Kalihi Valley (KKV), Islander Institute; and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Hawaiʻi—began partnering in 2023 on an in-depth effort to understand residents’ views on economic development. Reflecting on lessons learned throughout this process, the partners reveal several important action items for future development efforts, including: ✅ Listen to—and actually heed—resident recommendations. ✅ Trust community-based anchors to catalyze trust-based development. ✅ Invest in innovative, community-led models. Construction for Honolulu's public rail transit line has reached the city's urban core and its arrival has made residents nervous about a coming wave of redevelopment and displacement. With support from Kaiser Permanente through LISC, Kalihi neighborhood residents have organized and are now creating an economic values plan which centers community culture, health, and well-being alongside jobs and housing for long-time residents. Hear from LISC Hawaii’s Matt Hara and local partners from Islander Institute and Kokua Kalihi Valley about how our economic inclusion model has gained traction in Hawaii: https://lnkd.in/e3krZBWJ

Meet Karin Wallace, a childcare provider from Battle Creek, Michigan. She began her venture into child care 21 years ago after seeking the service for her own children. Unsatisfied with the available help, Wallace took matters into her own hands and decided to start her own home-based childcare business. “My plan was just to do it until my kids were in school, but then I ended up loving it,” she says. Even though she's got decades of experience, Wallace is always looking for new ideas and tools to enhance her business operations. That's why she joined a network of family childcare providers convened by Southwest Child Care Resources with support from LISC and Procter & Gamble. 📹 Hear what Wallace has to say about how the network has helped her and other home-based childcare providers strengthen their businesses while maintaining a high standard of care for families they serve.
