Our mission: to inspire conservation of the ocean

About us

The mission of the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the ocean. Our diverse and dedicated team works in many ways to assure the future health of the ocean and the people who depend on a healthy ocean for their survival. Our living exhibits and visit programs are considered among the best in the world. We offer free education programs for more than 100,000 schoolchildren and educators each year -- and our new Bechtel Family Center for Ocean Education and Leadership is taking that work to a new level. Rigorous science underpins all of our work to advance policies that promote ocean health in the United States and internationally. Our respected Seafood Watch program is a global leader, giving businesses and consumers the tools to transform how fish are caught and farmed around the world. Our award-winning exhibits feature the rich diversity of marine life along California’s central coast -- from sea otters and kelp forests to jellyfish and sharks. Our newest exhibition, "Into the Deep / En lo Profundo," features never-before-see animals from the deep ocean. We attract nearly 2 million visitors a year and engage 3 million followers through our social media channels. Our education programs are shaping a new generation of science-literate ocean conservation leaders, and giving educators better tools for ecosystem-based learning. We promote science-based action on behalf of key species like sea otters, sharks, and Pacific bluefin tuna. We've advocated successfully to create marine protected areas, eliminate ocean plastic pollution, and end to the shark fin trade, and we support policies to address climate change and ocean acidification, which threaten ocean health, and our own survival.

Our oceans, our fisheries, our coastal communities—everything we love can thrive if we work together on climate. That's why the latest proposal to expand offshore drilling is so concerning. SeafoodSource quoted Monterey Bay Aquarium leadership in an article reporting that the Trump administration announced plans to open federal waters off California and Florida to oil drilling—drawing bipartisan opposition from coastal communities. Monterey Bay Aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard warns: "We're facing life-threatening impacts of climate change, and this ill-conceived effort to open massive parts of our ocean to offshore oil and gas leasing is a major step backward in the nation's urgently needed transition away from fossil fuels." Chief Conservation and Science Officer Margaret Spring adds: "Common sense, science, and hard lessons from the devastating impacts of oil spills on wildlife, people and the local economy tell us we need to reject new oil and gas leasing in our ocean." Offshore drilling puts all of us at risk. She illustrates a longfin inshore squid for Seafood Watch; an illustration that will appear in emails, assessment trackers, and even news reports. After testing colors in Photoshop, she finished the artwork with a stunning mix of watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, and gel pen. A perfect blend of science, art, and ocean conservation. 🌊 👏 #MontereyBayAquarium #ScienceMeetsArt #InternLife #ScientificIllustration

  • Happy World Fisheries Day—a time to celebrate all the ocean and fish that sustain us! Want to learn more about sustainable seafood? 🐟🦦 Then you otter meet Talley! As the outreach partnership lead at Seafood Watch, she’s responsible for collaborating with restaurants, zoos, and aquariums, in an effort to share the Aquarium’s mission of choosing sustainable seafood. And why are we talking about sustainable seafood inside an Aquarium? Because people and animals depend on this important global food source. Join us for a day in Talley’s life, and follow along as she hangs out in the kitchen of the Aquarium, meets with chefs, like Kerry Heffernan, checks in on the otters, and encourages the practice of sustainable fishing methods. Choosing sustainable seafood protects the ocean and people who rely on it. Learn more about Seafood Watch: https://lnkd.in/g6w_PSx7

  • Healthy, intact ecosystems support thriving wildlife, clean air, and stable weather—all essential for people and nature to flourish. Today, the California coast we cherish and the delicate ocean ecosystems just beyond it face a renewed threat from offshore drilling. The proposed National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program threatens California waters along the entire coastline despite widespread opposition from residents, businesses, state leadership, fishermen, and Indigenous groups. Areas along the Gulf of Mexico and nearly the entirety of Alaska’s federal waters are also among the areas the Trump Administration wants to open up for bidding. The Monterey Bay Aquarium maintains our long-standing belief that the health, safety, and stability of Californians and the ocean should not be for sale. Offshore drilling puts all of us at risk. Welcome to the Emerald City, Ruby. ✨🦦 For over 30 years, the Seattle Aquarium has led in sea otter research, contributed to recovery efforts and cared for northern sea otters who are unable to live in the wild. Today is a big day as we welcome Ruby—the first southern sea otter in our care. Ruby was stranded and rescued as a 1-day-old pup weighing just 1.9 pounds and was raised behind-the-scenes at Monterey Bay Aquarium in their sea otter surrogacy program. After several attempts to release Ruby to live on her own in the wild, she was ultimately deemed non-releasable by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She went on to join their sea otter habitat in 2022, charming guests both in person and online, and becoming a beloved ambassador for her species. Care teams from Seattle and Monterey Bay worked together for months, exploring Ruby’s history, likes and dislikes, social needs and more. Together, we ultimately decided our otter population here in Seattle would be a great fit for her. She's now settling into her new home and you’re welcome to come pay her a visit! ❤️

Aquaculture is going high-tech! 🚀 Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are a game-changer for sustainable seafood. These land-based systems filter and reuse water, meaning less pollution, less waste, and healthier fish. Nearly all species farmed in RAS receive green and yellow ratings from Seafood Watch, making them fin-credible seafood options. 🛒 Shopping tips: Many species are farmed this way, but you’re likely to find salmon, tilapia, trout, and kingfish in US retail and restaurant locations—some packages may call out the term ‘land-based’ to indicate RAS. Our faves to look for include salmon from Sustainable Blue and Atlantic Sapphire. Both produce Atlantic salmon raised in recirculating aquaculture systems, which is rated green by Seafood Watch. #SeafoodWatch #RateAMinute #Aquaculture #SustainableSeafood #MontereyBayAquarium

The environmental risks posed by deep-sea mining extend far beyond destruction of seabed habitats. New research from the University of Hawaii at Manoa affirms that plumes of sediment from mining operations pose a real threat to life in the ocean water column – the abundant plankton at the base of food webs that support so many other species, including commercially important fishes like tunas and mahi mahi. Their findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, reaffirm earlier work by researchers including Steven Haddock of MBARI, who have urged the global community to move cautiously in the face of all the uncertainties. Yes, the world needs to meet the growing demand for the technology we depend on. But we need to do so without the damaging extraction of raw minerals from the bottom of the ocean. The good news is that innovative approaches are reducing the need to mine the seafloor, an environmentally risky and economically suspect approach. I’m confident we can find less destructive ways to support these technologies. https://lnkd.in/gA57DGdk #SeabedMining #DeepSeaMining #MarineLife #SedimentPlumes #FoodWebs #fisheries Nature Portfolio The Associated Press Alexa St. John
