Blakely was attending Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, a beloved tradition of her family for generations along the Guadalupe River. This was her first summer at Camp Mystic that she was thrilled to attend after three joyful years of going to the Pyramid Kids Camps at Moody Gardens. She was the granddaughter of Doug McLeod, who has served as chairman of the board at Moody Gardens for the past 42 years. McLeod is a native and respected member of the Galveston community and has played an instrumental role in the creation, growth and vision of Moody Gardens, a nonprofit recreational and educational destination that inspires visitors from across Texas and beyond. Blakely thoroughly enjoyed visits to Moody Gardens and cherished her time at its camps. In her honor and through the wishes of her family, the Blakely McCrory Hope Fund will sponsor other children to experience, as well as the operation of the Pyramid Kids Camps—allowing her legacy of joy, curiosity and kindness to live on through the laughter and learning of future campers. “We hope this fund will be a beacon of hope, helping to carry Blakely’s light forward,” said Grandfather and Moody Gardens Chairman of the Board Doug McLeod, who added that camp was a special place for her to learn and make friends. “Her memory will live on through the children who get to experience the camps she loved so much.” The Blakely McCrory Hope Fund honors a child who brought light and love to all who knew her. Through this fund, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift, offering other children the opportunity to grow, learn and create memories that last a lifetime. 150 TONS of shucked shells collected since 2020! 🦪🙌 We're giving a Texas-sized shoutout to Moody Gardens®, who began partnering with us in October of 2020 to help us with shell collections on Galveston Island. Now, we're celebrating 300,000 pounds of shucked shells collected since the partnership's inception. 🎉🤝 Special thanks to Greg (pictured here) and all the Moody Gardens staff who help us collect shucked shells from our island partners, and to Moody Gardens for allowing us to store the shell and cure it on site. 🦪 Also included in the 150 tons of shucked shells, are those recycled by the Seafood Safety Lab at Texas A&M University Galveston Campus and all our incredible restaurant partners on the island. Swipe to the end to see where you can shuck sustainably on island time. 🏝️ For a full list of our participating oyster shell recycling restaurant partners and to learn more about the program, please visit https://lnkd.in/gpY8y-Fm #Galveston #MoodyGardens #OysterShellRecycling #Oysters

💡 Light plays an important role in almost every aspect of animal behavior and biology. However, designing habitats with proper lighting is complex. 💭 It requires careful consideration of species biology, habitat layout, and practical needs like ensuring caregivers can see and reach animals even in low-light conditions. 🤝 At zoos and aquariums, providing ideal lighting for animal wellbeing is a team effort involving lighting experts, animal care specialists, manufacturers, and researchers. 🔆 Each species requires a specific wavelength, intensity, and light schedule to support its unique physiological and behavioral needs. Sometimes those needs are complicated! 🐧 #Penguins, for example, are known to have particularly challenging lighting requirements. In the wild, they experience dramatic seasonal shifts in daylight hours and intensity, which are difficult to replicate in a controlled outdoor exhibit. ☀️🌙 📃 Research on the relationship between lighting and habitat design is still emerging, and AZA-accredited #Zoos and #Aquariums are leading the way.
