  • WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 – The following statement on the President’s remarks about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi is by National Press Club President Mike Balsamo. “The National Press Club is deeply troubled by President Trump’s comments today regarding the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Mr. Khashoggi’s murder inside a diplomatic facility was a grave violation of human rights and a direct attack on press freedom. That fact is not in dispute. For reporters around the world — and for those who risk their lives to report on powerful figures, governments, and global events — statements that appear to minimize or excuse the killing of a journalist have real-world consequences. They can embolden those who wish to silence reporters, and they can undermine the essential principle that journalists must be able to work without fear of violence or retribution. The National Press Club stands with Jamal Khashoggi’s family, with our colleagues at The Washington Post, and with journalists everywhere who continue to do their jobs under threat. Mr. Khashoggi’s death was a tragedy and a crime. His life and work deserve truth, transparency, and unwavering recognition of the principles he upheld. We urge all world leaders — including our own — to speak with moral clarity about the protection of journalists and to reinforce the universal commitment that a free press is indispensable to a free society."

  • The National Press Club has opened a new library exhibit honoring the Pentagon press corps — a group of journalists whose work is essential to the country’s understanding of its military and national security decisions. On Oct. 15, dozens of credentialed reporters were ordered to surrender their access to the Pentagon after refusing to sign new government-issued documents that would have required them to accept restricted movement, unequal access, and to report only information deemed “authorized for public release.” The move was a sweeping break with long-standing norms of openness and equal treatment for the press. When journalists declined to sign the conditions, they were told to turn in their badges and to clear out their long-standing workspaces. The library exhibit, which features a variety of the items those journalists were able to carry from their workspaces on Oct. 15, is one of several ways the National Press Club is spotlighting and supporting the Pentagon Press Corps in its fight for access and overarching press freedom values.

  • WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 – The following statement is from Mike Balsamo, president of the National Press Club: "The National Press Club sharply condemns the decision by the Beijing High Court to uphold the seven-year sentence against journalist Dong Yuyu. By refusing to address the central issues raised on appeal, the court has ensured that Dong will remain behind bars for years to come — not for wrongdoing, but for the ordinary professional work that journalists around the world carry out every day. This ruling is a deep injustice. Dong’s alleged “offense” consists of routine conversations, meetings, and reporting — the very activities that underpin a free press and an informed public. When a journalist is imprisoned for engaging in normal professional exchanges, it signals a profound retreat from transparency and the rule of law. Keeping a journalist confined for years because of his work is indefensible. Great nations do not fear reporters — they protect them. Dong should be released on time served and allowed to return to his family. We are also deeply concerned that Dong’s family, who were present in the courtroom, were not permitted to speak with him. Their continued separation highlights the human cost of this case and the urgent need for relief.” https://lnkd.in/gDTDEXF6
