Many of us dedicate our lives to our work and effecting change through our projects, collaborations and teams. Giving respect, validation and gratitude are true signs of effective and purpose driven leadership.
Best-Selling Author & Keynote Speaker | I help talented people get heard without being loud or self-promoting.
“Don’t they know how good they have it here?” I overheard this on a recent flight. Two guys in suits. Talking loudly. One was venting about his team. They keep asking for “more recognition.” He sounded frustrated. Like they were asking for something unreasonable. But here’s what I’ve learned: When people ask for validation at work, they’re not being entitled. They’re being human. We all need to know our work matters. That someone sees us. That we’re not invisible. It’s not about trophies or employee of the month. It’s about feeling like what you do makes a difference to someone. Even the most talented people will quietly start looking elsewhere when they stop feeling seen. Recognition isn’t extra. It’s not a perk for special occasions. It’s basic fuel for engagement. I wanted to lean over and tell him: They're not asking for too much. They're asking before they leave.
