Researchers at ORNL conducted a high-precision physics experiment designed to test for the existence of sterile neutrinos, which are theoretical particles once proposed to explain inconsistencies in past neutrino studies. Using pulsed beams of neutrinos from the Spallation Neutron Source and advanced detection systems, the team measured subtle scattering behaviors with unprecedented precision. The results substantially narrowed the range of possible conditions where such particles could exist. Read more ⤵️ #BigScience #Physics #Neutrinos

The nuclear reactions that fuel the sun could soon be harnessed to generate electricity on Earth — with help from supercomputers at ORNL. Type One Energy, a Knoxville-based startup, expects to build the world’s most advanced stellarator fusion device by 2030, with a pilot power plant to follow that would produce commercial fusion energy by the mid-2030s. Using ORNL's Summit supercomputer, they were able to model their next-generation design and shave at least a year off the time from drawing board to reality.
