Research and Education for a Better Society
About us
Sage is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and library resources with a growing range of technologies to enable discovery, access, and engagement. Believing that research and education are critical in shaping society, 24-year-old Sara Miller McCune founded Sage in 1965. Today, we are controlled by a group of trustees charged with maintaining our independence and mission indefinitely. Driven by the belief that social and behavioral science has the power to improve society, we focus on publishing impactful research and enabling robust research methodology. We produce high-quality educational resources that support instructors to prepare the citizens, policymakers, educators and researchers of the future. Sage is committed to building an inclusive organization where all individuals are treated with fairness and respect, regardless of age, ability, gender, marriage and partnership status, pregnancy and parental responsibilities, race, religion and belief, socio-economic background, or sexual orientation. Diversity is one of the cornerstones of a vibrant culture and we are undertaking work to build a Sage that is more equitable and representative of the communities we serve and of which we are part. As well as driving change within Sage, we are also passionate about supporting diversity, equity and inclusion in wider society through our publishing activities. Globally, men own $105 trillion more than women. That’s four times the size of the US economy. But as women tend to live longer than men, they will inherit from their heterosexual partners over the next few decades and control an unprecedented share of global wealth. In this new issue of The Evidence, journalist Josephine Lethbridge has asked two experts: with more women than ever about to hold the reins, might they steer wealth – and power – in a different direction? According to Jacqueline Ackerman, Interim Director of the Women's Philanthropy at Indiana University, “when women earn more and control more wealth, they give more to philanthropy … Many women are motivated by a desire to strengthen communities and address systemic issues, often prioritising impact and connection over recognition or tax benefits.” Louise Russell-Prywata, who works in the non-profit sector and is Senior Atlantic Fellow at LSE International Inequalities Institute, points to the growth of “participatory” and “trust-based” philanthropy – models that put decision-making in the hands of those most affected. For #WorkInPublishing week, we’re revisiting an exciting moment from earlier this year, when Maria Omena-Neale, Sage’s Senior Marketing Manager for Books, was honored in The Bookseller’s Rising Stars Class of 2025. Maria leads campaigns for education textbooks, study skills guides, and books that center social justice – and has earned recognition as a Rising Star for her efforts to promote diversity in publishing. Reflecting on her achievement, she shared: “I’ve always tried to lead with heart and humanity with everything I do: approaching people as human first, customers second. The fact that this translates into results – and that I get to do that at Sage for books I genuinely believe in – makes it all even more meaningful.” Congratulations, Maria, on this well-deserved recognition!
