About us

Second Harvest Heartland is a leading hunger-relief organization. In partnership with more than 1,100 food shelves and hunger-relief programs in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, we provided nearly 128 million meals to neighbors last year. We also help families enroll in food assistance and provide prepared meals for people who need more than groceries. Second Harvest Heartland is a leader, convener and voice in hunger-related policy discussions. We’re working on a bold goal to cut hunger in half for all Minnesotans by 2030. With the help of the whole community, we’ll reduce hunger today by increasing access to emergency food, and prevent hunger tomorrow with policy, partnerships and one-on-one services, all while tracking progress to ensure we’re effective and accountable. There’s a role for each of us to play in making hunger history. Reach out to learn how you can join us or learn more at 2harvest.org. • We are so grateful for the incredible movement of generosity from Minnesotans on Give to the Max Day! When the need is this great, our community never fails to show up for our neighbors facing hunger. With your help, we were able to fund a record-breaking 4.5 million meals. Our gratitude also goes out to presenting sponsor ADM, as well as Post Consumer Brands and other generous sponsors who provided the matching funds that multiple the impact of every gift to provide even more meals. This year’s giving day was a powerful reflection of what we can accomplish together. Thank you for bringing us one step closer to ending hunger. #GTMD25

  • Today is Give to the Max Day and people all over the state are coming together to donate to causes they care about, demonstrating the power of collective giving and the generosity of Minnesotans. Today, we need your help to reach our goal to fund 2 million meals. In 2024, Second Harvest Heartland provided 145 million meals with record food shelf visits for the third year in a row, with more than 9 million visits last year. High costs for groceries, housing, energy, and healthcare are making it hard for families to keep their fridges full on a daily basis, let alone to afford a special holiday meal. Every $1 you give now can go TWICE as far to provide 6 meals for neighbors facing hunger, thanks to our generous sponsors. Your support helps make it possible to ensure every neighbor has nourishing food on the table this Thanksgiving and beyond. Give now at 2harvest.org/gtmd.

Make a gift today at 2harvest.org/gtmd and your gift can double in impact! Every $1 you give now can go twice as far to provide 6 meals for neighbors facing hunger, thanks to matching funds from our generous sponsors. As 1 in 5 Minnesota families struggle to afford the groceries they need, and thousands of neighbors are impacted by the largest SNAP cuts in history, we need your help to reach our goal to fund 2 million meals. Make a MATCHED gift now at 2harvest.org/gtmd Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, ADM, for providing matching funds to amplify the impact of our community’s generosity this Give to the Max Day!

  • After 44 Days, the record-breaking government shutdown has finally ended but its impact will last much longer. Minnesota’s hunger relief network has been straining to keep up with the recent hunger surge caused by this shutdown. We have been working alongside partner food shelves to get more food into the community to meet this new demand to meet neighbors wherever they are. Though these weeks have been challenging, we also have seen an incredible outpouring of generosity from supporters locally and beyond. We want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank everyone who stepped up and asked, "How can we help?" at one of the most critical moments the hunger relief network has faced. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated, volunteered & amplified hunger relief work and by using your voice, sharing our resources and reaching out to lawmakers on the importance of hunger relief programs. In times like these, we need one another, and the support, generosity & community care we have seen rise up has been an inspiring bright spot during such a tumultuous time. While the shutdown has ended, the hunger crisis continues. The shutdown drove another spike in demand at food shelves throughout the state at a time when hunger rates are already at record levels. This will continue with many households continuing to feel the ripple effects of the shutdown, and we will also begin to see the impact of the largest SNAP cuts in history due to the legislation passed in July. The need is urgent, and every bit of help makes a difference. Your generosity is proof that food has the power to unite us and we’re going to need that united front to support our neighbors over the weeks and months ahead. • The federal government shutdown has wide-ranging impacts on our community— from neighbors to hunger-relief organizations, to our economy. As of today, SNAP recipients will not receive benefits for November. That means 440,000 Minnesotans will lose grocery assistance for as long as the shutdown continues. The hunger-relief network and local food shelves are bracing for a surge in need — on top of a crisis that already has 1 in 5 households in Minnesota experiencing food insecurity. People have asked what they can do to help. Here are the best ways to help us: 🤝 Volunteer - Support your neighbors and your local food shelf by volunteering during this time of high need! Food shelves are facing a spike in demand and could use your support more than ever. Find your nearest food shelf using our interactive map here: https://bit.ly/4qHH4Xg 💚 Donate - Your donation today can help us get more food into the community at this critical time. Make an emergency gift to Second Harvest Heartland to help get food to Minnesota families. Donate here: https://bit.ly/47EjdiI 📣 Advocate - Contact your federal lawmakers and urge them to do whatever they can to fund SNAP and protect the more than 440,000 Minnesotans who rely on it to afford the food they need. Use your voice: https://bit.ly/3JEiGVS Thank you to everyone who has reached out, donated, volunteered, or spoken up to your networks. We are so grateful for your support. We need everyone at the table to help meet this new challenge and it's been powerful to see so many people ready to join us.

  • On the final Saturday of Hunger Action Month in September Second Harvest Heartland, in partnership with the Sanneh Foundation and Keystone Community Services, held a community gathering focused on sharing food and connecting with resources on the Great Lawn in front of Allianz Field in St. Paul. In one stop, neighbors got some free groceries, their annual flu shot, learned more about signing up for SNAP or other food programs, found resources for their pets, and learned about recreation programs for their family. Partners who generously shared their time and expertise to make this event a success and share their programs with the community include The Sanneh Foundation, Keystone Community Services, Fairview Health Services, Animal Humane Society, Saint Paul Parks and Recreation, and Ramsey County Social Services. We are grateful for their collaboration and for the value they provide to the community.

  • Thank you to everyone who came out to the Dish Gala on Saturday!

Second Harvest Heartland hosted the Dish gala on Saturday. It was an evening of breakthrough generosity that left me confident we can make hunger history! We need everyone to come to the table to deliver more food today, meaningful support for a better tomorrow, and long-term stability through community change. We can make full dinner tables as much of a given as books at school, running water and electricity. Let’s go, Minnesota!

🍽️ The government shutdown has left millions of our neighbors uncertain about how they will access the nutritious food we all need to thrive. As people across the country feel the strain of high food prices and elevated living costs, any missed paychecks or food benefits could mean facing impossible choices. 📢 Tell Congress to work together and reopen the government: https://bit.ly/3LSFuLj

    • We need a bipartisan solution from our lawmakers to end the shutdown. Urge Congress: Work together and reopen the government.
