It’s been a little while since I’ve shared an update, but the school year is well underway and off to a fantastic start. Every day, I’m grateful for the wonderful students who make teaching so meaningful and joyful. I’m also thankful for the opportunity to continue my work with Teach Plus Pennsylvania, focusing on solutions to the ongoing teacher shortage in our state. Last week, I had the honor of serving on a panel at the PA Needs Teachers Summit, centered around the theme Reimagining the Teacher Role. It was a powerful gathering of people committed to strengthening the educator pipeline and rethinking what it means to teach in Pennsylvania today. I was fortunate to share that space with thought leaders like Ed Fuller and Richard Ingersoll, whose research continues to shape this work. I’m deeply appreciative of the thoughtful leadership of Laura Boyce and Emily Sagor (Hoxie), whose coordination and support make collaborations like this possible. The summit itself highlighted the strong partnership between Teach Plus Pennsylvania and National Center on Education and the Economy, working together to advance this shared vision in meaningful ways. I was thrilled to see so many members of our Teach Plus fellowship team serving as table facilitators throughout the day—their voices and passion truly elevated the conversations. A special shout-out to my fellow senior fellows, Christine Persun and Dr. Ciminy St. Clair, who co-lead this incredible group with me. Their leadership and dedication continue to inspire our work. I also appreciated the chance to connect with professionals across sectors, including insightful conversations with Cheryl Leatherbarrow, Leon Smith and Eric Levis. These relationships are what move this work forward. As we head into Thanksgiving, I’m filled with gratitude for the educators, researchers, policymakers, and partners who are committed to ensuring that every child in Pennsylvania has access to excellent, well-supported teachers—and to reimagining the teacher role in ways that honor the complexity, expertise, and humanity of this profession. With gratitude—and optimism—for the work ahead. 🙏🧡

Special Educator | Teach Plus Policy Fellow

Today I had the opportunity to add public comment at the MA state Board of Elementary & Secondary Education on a topic that is important to me, an educator in the classroom. This opportunity presented itself as part of my Educational Policy Fellowship that I am completing through TeachPlus, an organization that empowers teachers to become leaders within their communities and beyond. Proud to be part of an organization focused on amplifying teachers voices & student experiences.

Career & Technolgy Education Teacher, Educators Rising Teacher Leader

I am still processing the day I had yesterday at the The #PaNeedsTeachers Summit! The day was a working session where educators, policymakers, and advocates collaborate to design actionable solutions for Pennsylvania schools. The event was in partnership with Teach Plus and National Center on Education and the Economy. We had inspiring speakers, including Teacher of the Year, Leon Smith, and informative panel experts talking to us about the reasons we need to change the teaching profession in Pa and what innovative initiatives are happening around the United States and the rest of the world like strategic staffing and team-based teaching! Two initiatives in particular that are showing positive student outcomes are: 1. Next Education Workforce out of Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation, which works with schools to design and implement school staffing models that help address root causes of low and inequitable student outcomes, teachers shortages and burnout. 2. North Carolina’s Advanced Teaching Roles Inititative. This innovative staffing model aims to elevate teacher leaders. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/ekRGC-zP Great table discussions were an intriqual part of the day as well! It was great to meet the wonderful Jodi Roseman, Ed.D. in person… and she was even at my table!!! Jodi, you have a brilliant mind for education innovation! It was great to see Jodi along with so many other connections from Pennsylvania Educator Diversity Consortium (PEDC), some of my Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education connections, Lara Willox and Dr. Brooke K. Langan, some of my Teach Plus connections, Laura Boyce and Kristen Peeples, and Lancaster County’s own Representative Bryan Cutler! It was really inspiring to see all these people in the same room passionate about the same cause! Many new connections were made as well! What a phenomenal experience! (And a well organized event.) Thank you Laura Boyce Emily Sagor (Hoxie) Dr. Ciminy St. Clair Jill Weller-Reilly Christine Persun #TeachingRemiagined

  • A new report from Teach Plus Mississippi, "Moving From Data To Action: Recommendations From Teach Plus Mississippi Policy Fellows" outlines how connecting fragmented data across pre-K-12, higher education, and workforce systems can help Mississippi meet and succeed our postsecondary success goal. “We have the infrastructure for a powerful data system—we just need to make it work for the people who need it most. Teachers, administrators, students, and families all deserve access to clear, connected data that can answer critical questions about which pathways lead to good jobs and how well our schools are preparing students for what comes next. This isn’t just about hitting a statewide goal—it’s about giving every student in the Magnolia State the information they need to find and pursue the career pathway that matches their skills and aspirations,” said Sanford Johnson, Teach Plus Mississippi Executive Director. I am so grateful to be a part of a network like Teach Plus and PA Needs Teachers. Today's Reimagining Teaching summit was incredible! I had the opportunity to connect with K-12 educators, policymakers and administrators from all over the commonwealth of PA! Most importantly, I had the opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues like Dr. Ciminy St. Clair Leon Smith Jill Weller-Reilly and Kristen Peeples One of the points that stuck with me today is how students are the key to reimagining the role of education. What are students seeing as we educate them? How many of our students say they want to be educators? How can we make this role more attractive? I am proud to be doing this work with you all!

STEM Teacher Leader, Teacher Researcher, Teacher Educator, Einstein Fellow 2014-15, PAEMST 2021

Today, I joined Teach Plus PA, NCEE, educators (pre-service, practicing, higher ed), administrators, union leaders, policymakers, funders, researchers, and other education leaders for this year’s #PANeedsTeachers summit in Harrisburg. The topic of discussion: “Reimagining the teacher role.” Panelists, keynote speakers, and table discussions focused on how we might reorganize our schools so that teachers have opportunities for leadership, advancement, and professional growth that keeps teachers in classrooms—and improves schools. Lots of great ideas today and positive energy. There’s more to say. But for now I’m reflecting a lot on how research points to job satisfaction and working conditions as some of the biggest reasons teachers leave the profession. When we reorganize schools to empower teachers, teachers stay—and students learn more. Shoutout to my principal Dr. Nicole Patterson for supporting me in pursuing opportunities like this one. And shoutout to Teach Plus PA leaders and fellow fellows for making this such a fabulous day! PA Needs Teachers
