Navy veteran and paramedic Steve Viola, NRP, PPO ,Certified Coach shared with Texas Monthly how he turned to ketamine during one of the darkest points in his life. For Steve, treatment helped interrupt suicidal thoughts and brought him back from the edge. Steve has lost nearly thirty friends to suicide, most of them veterans. He’s committed to making sure others get the help they need — and this summer he’s riding more than 10,000 miles in the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge to raise funds in support of our mission. We’re proud to call Steve a friend and grateful for everything he does to support veterans and expand access to mental health care in Texas and beyond. Last week, legislators, staff, and partners joined us at the Texas Capitol for a Lunch and Learn with United States Marine Corps Veteran Ryan Roberts. Ryan led a powerful discussion on moral injury, the veteran suicide crisis, and how traditional mental health treatments have not addressed the root causes of suffering. He shared how evidence-informed, veteran-centered approaches can address moral injury through peer leadership, trauma-informed community care, and expanded access to psychedelic-assisted therapy. These educational sessions create space for lawmakers, staff, and partners to engage directly with lived experience and explore how emerging research can shape veteran-centered policy in Texas. Learn more about the work Ryan is doing: https://journeyhome.vet/ Follow our page Texans for Greater Mental Health to stay connected with upcoming events, policy updates, and research advancing safe, evidence-based access to care in Texas & beyond.

Our team was proud to participate in AIM2, the second American Ibogaine Meeting, with our friends and the incredible team at Americans for Ibogaine alongside representatives from states across the country who are exploring a multistate funding model for FDA-approved ibogaine clinical trials. Our Executive Director, Logan Davidson led a Policy and Implementation session discussing the historic bill the Texas Ibogaine Initiative (SB 2308) which was a coordinated effort with a coalition of veterans, lawmakers, organizations, researchers, and advocates including Americans for Ibogaine and more. Thank you to everyone who joined us and to AFI for hosting such a powerful gathering! We are so excited for what’s to come. 📸: Chase Rowan AnneClaire Stapleton Sally Roberts Ethan E. Reason for Hope has awarded $500,000 to expand the clinical trial established by Texas House Bill 1802—the landmark legislation that provided state funding for psilocybin-assisted therapy research for veterans with PTSD. The study is led by Dr. Lynnette A. Averill, PhD, a member of our Texans for Greater Mental Health Advisory Committee. We're proud to see Texas's investment in veteran healing and psychedelic research being scaled by philanthropic support. This investment will help build on the foundation Texas created and enable further development of evidence-based treatments for those who've served.
We honor our Veterans today and every day by continuing to fight for expanded access to care they need. Reason for Hope is proud to announce we have awarded $500,000 to Baylor College of Medicine to expand the Texas-state funded trial of psilocybin-assisted therapy for Veterans with PTSD. The study is led by our Chief Science Officer, Lynnette A. Averill, PhD Associate Professor in Baylor’s The Menninger Clinic. We’re excited to continue building on this work and supporting Veterans and their families, stay tuned for two more grant announcements coming soon. Happy Veterans Day!
