All year, our colleagues bring STEM to life for students, whether that’s building simple circuits with elementary schoolers, guiding lab tours for teens, volunteering at local science fairs, or mentoring young innovators who are just beginning to see themselves in science. Every November during STEM Education Month we highlight that work as colleagues across the globe lead hands-on activities, share their career journeys, and create welcoming spaces where students can ask questions, try something new, and see what’s possible in STEM. To every colleague who has spent an afternoon in a classroom, a weekend at a science fair, an evening preparing for a STEM event and so much more: thank you. What does hope look like when you’ve been told your lung cancer is terminal? It can look like the people in this room. At a summit for lung cancer patients in San Diego, more than 450 survivors and their care partners honored Colin Barton, a 67-year-old retired dentist, nearly 10 years past a diagnosis that once gave him months to live. Colin’s “bonus time,” as he calls it, began when next-generation sequencing (NGS) revealed the ALK mutation driving his cancer and opened the door to targeted therapies designed to go after the disease at its source. His pain eased. The tumors shrank. And instead of preparing to say goodbye, he co-founded a nonprofit that helps raise millions of dollars for research and support for others facing the same diagnosis. “Nobody thought I would be here five years after diagnosis, much less now, almost 10 years,” Colin says. “I wouldn’t be here without next-generation sequencing.” This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we honor Colin, and all the patients, care partners, clinicians, and scientists, who show what’s possible when advanced testing helps match the right treatment to the right patient at the right time.

A place where cell and gene therapy breakthroughs can become real-world care for more patients. This week we opened our Advanced Therapies Collaboration Center (ATxCC) in Philadelphia. Inside BioLabs for Advanced Therapeutics Philadelphia's newly expanded 53,000-square-foot biotech incubator, the fourth site in our global network equips researchers with expertise, technology, and processes to help standardize and scale manufacturing so that promising therapies can move from the lab to the patients who need them with greater speed and confidence. We recently celebrated the opening of our expanded research and development center of excellence in Bengaluru, a 37,000-square-foot space where teams can design and make high-quality materials used in medical tests and research. The U.S. FDA has granted 510(k) clearance to our EXENT® System to aid in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that affects more than 176,000 people each year. EXENT is a first-of-its-kind, automated system that delivers increased sensitivity, specific identification of disease markers, and improved laboratory workflow to support fast, confident diagnoses. The process of diagnosing multiple myeloma can be complex and slow, often relying on subjective interpretation of test results. The EXENT system is designed to detect and isotype M-proteins at low concentrations and clearly flag signals from therapeutic antibody-derived proteins to deliver clear, automated results. This helps give clinicians a reliable view of the patient’s condition and supports early, confident diagnosis.
