Congratulations to Aaron, one of four 2025 recipients of the Luminary Award! This recognition highlights UnityPoint Health team members who use exceptional leadership and compassion to make a real difference in the lives of our patients and communities every day. Aaron, a physical therapist, is known for his unwavering positivity and adaptability, especially when working with patients in their own homes. He focuses entirely on the person's needs — like the day he prepared a meal for a patient whose caregiver was away. Through his daily actions, both big and small, he embodies what it means to truly care by lifting up the people around him and ensuring everyone knows they matter. Sheila has had an incredible, nearly 40-year career at UnityPoint Health, beginning as a medical assistant to her current role as Director of Quality and Clinical Effectiveness. When Sheila was just seven, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Witnessing the compassionate care from doctors, nurses and spiritual care team members made a deep impact, creating her foundational commitment to helping others. That early experience, coupled with seeing how far we've advanced in early screenings and treatments since then, keeps her deeply committed to improving health care for everyone. Sheila also says it's fulfilling to lead the "best people at UnityPoint Health," noting they inspire her and help her grow. Throughout her tenure, she's found great satisfaction in mentoring and coaching team members, seeing them advance their careers and skills. UnityPoint Health – Meriter and UW Health have opened The NEST (Neonatal Education Simulation and Training Center), a permanent, advanced facility dedicated to perfecting critical care for newborns. Using realistic simulation and virtual reality technology, medical teams practice high-stakes scenarios in a safe environment. This helps staff maintain and improve life-saving skills that are vital, but not used every day. “By going through all the skills and the scenarios we might run into in real life, we’re just more prepared for when they do come up,” said Kate, a nurse and neonatal outreach coordinator at Meriter. This collaboration enhances professional skillsets, ensuring the highest level of preparedness and care for the community's most vulnerable patients. Ready to make a difference? Great discussions at last week's annual MyCityMyHealth event in Des Moines. Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Greg Johnson, and Community Health Manager, Chris McCarthy, led powerful dialogues about the challenges and opportunities in health care today. The focus was centered on how UnityPoint Health is improving the health of the communities we serve, alongside important updates and awareness on men's health.

Josh joined the Marines in 2000, serving eight years and gaining structure, purpose and a lifelong sense of belonging. When his service ended, Josh, like many veterans, struggled with returning to civilian life. He found purpose again through his work at UnityPoint Health and his involvement with our Veterans CommUNITY Network. "The Veterans Network is about bringing that sense of belonging back and finding a group of people who understand you," Josh says. "We keep it light, positive and focused on community." The Network connects veteran team members across UnityPoint Health, offering support, friendship and shared meaning through activities like celebrating Veterans Day, organizing service projects and similar stories. UnityPoint Health is proud to support its veteran team members year-round. This year, we're recognizing those who've served with UnityPoint Health challenge coins, a small token of appreciation for their service, leadership and continued commitment to caring for others. 34 years, one clinic, countless connections From intern to clinic administrator, Jenny's entire 34-year career has been dedicated to UnityPoint Health. Her motivation isn't just a job — it's the privilege of watching families grow up, from grandparents to grandchildren, right in her clinic. She shares the profound lesson that guides her work: "The essence of care isn't just conversation, but contact and connection." Inspired by her mentor, a geriatrician, Jenny operates on the core belief that everyone is worthy of respect and deserves care. It’s a reminder that often, it’s the little things — like helping with a necklace or always being kind and present — that make the biggest difference in a patient's day. Our Chief Medical Officer is at the Becker's Healthcare conference in Chicago this week, sharing insights on collaborations in population health, a vital focus for proactively improving the health outcomes of our communities.
I’m a physician leader and change agent—combining compassion, professionalism, and results-driven focus to advance equity, improve outcomes, and build a healthcare system that works for everyone.
#Outandabout in Chicago at the Becker's Healthcare this week. I'm proud to represent UnityPoint Health and discuss the outstanding work we are doing in service to our patients, team members and community. It was an honor to be a panelist along side Arshad K Rahim, MD, MBA, FACP, Bruce McNulty, and Richard Shannon as we discussed collaborations in population health. Today, I'm participating in another conversation and eager to hear different perspectives and well as engage in dialogue. #UPH #Beckers #populationhealth #seizeopportunity #FOCUSvalues
