Movement disorders are neurologic conditions that can be especially difficult to diagnose, treat, and understand. That's why today, on World Movement Disorders Day, we are promoting #MoveDisorder awareness and sharing Tim's incredible and inspirational journey. At just 37, Tim noticed a stiffness in his right hand that gradually spread to his arm, leg and foot. Eventually diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease and with his symptoms worsening, Tim turned to The Cole Center for Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders at UT Medical Center. Under the care of movement disorders neurologist Shadi Barbu, MD, Tim pursued physical therapy, speech therapy and medication. But by 2023, they began discussing deep brain stimulation (DBS) – a surgical treatment that uses implanted electrodes to send electrical pulses to targeted areas of the brain. Initially apprehensive about the surgery, Tim noticed that he was struggling to throw a ball with his kids and decided it was time to act. Later that year, neurosurgeon Carter Gerard, MD implanted the electrodes and a chest neurostimulator. With each follow-up, the device was fine-tuned and medications reduced. “I’m down to just one pill a day,” Tim said. “The results are incredible.” For Tim, DBS offered more than symptom relief – it gave him hope, independence, and the ability to make music agai “Having the DBS surgery has helped tremendously – for daily life, but also it’ll give me a lot of hope for years to come" he said. Learn more about Tim's inspirational journey in this video. #WorldMovementDisorderDay #MoveDisorder #ParkinsonsAwareness #ParkinsonsDisease #Together4PD #Parkinsons

When 82-year-old Richard fainted twice in 24 hours, his family was terrified. For him, it felt like he just “closed his eyes for five seconds.” In reality, his heart had stopped. Cardiologists in the Heart, Lung, Vascular Institute discovered problems tied to ventricular tachycardia and implanted a defibrillator to save his life. “I can’t say enough about Dr. Michael Bailey’s expertise and care,” Richard said. “It made all the difference.” Today, he’s back to playing cards, family dinners, and enjoying life with his wife of 58 years. For Richard, the most powerful medicine wasn’t just the device in his chest that saved his life, it was the persistence and expertise of his doctor. Click the link in the comments to read more about Richard’s journey and learn why he says, “Family and trust in the good doctors at UT Medical Center - that’s everything. During this season of gratitude, stories like Richard’s are powerful reminders of the meaningful impact compassionate care can make.

Thank you WBIR-TV for this inspiring story about Kaitlin and Isaac Carver, who were visiting family in Maryville when Kaitlin's water broke at 28 weeks pregnant. That started a 110-day stay here at UT Medical Center, and giving their twin baby boys some very special names to honor Knoxville and the place they spent their first weeks of life. https://lnkd.in/eJJmfDcW
