Oikonomou, MD, PhD; Stephanie Samuels, MD; and Tarsheen Sethi, MD, MSc, recipients of a Winn Career Development Award (Winn Award)!    Members of each cohort are selected by the Winn Awards’ National Advisory Committee, which is chaired by the program’s namesake, Dr. Rob Winn, director of VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, and includes Yale Cancer Center’s Roy Herbst, MD, PhD, and Patricia LoRusso, DO, among its committee members.   As members of the 5th cohort, they recently completed a 4.5-day workshop in New Mexico on the design and implementation of clinical trials developed with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).     https://lnkd.in/eUCsYPHZ

We were grateful to be co-host of the 8th annual New England Hematologic Diseases Symposium. Amer Zeidan, MBBS, was co-chair and also presented an update on the management of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).     “It was a great pleasure to co-chair and kick off the 8th annual New England Hematologic Diseases Symposium with an outstanding lineup of speakers in myeloid cancers and diseases, plasma cell neoplasms, lymphoid cancers, and hematologic diseases,” remarked Dr. Zeidan. “This meeting is a wonderful example of successful collaboration between physician leaders from the major health systems in the state.”

Congratulations to Martin Matthews, laboratory supervisor, who was honored with a Linda K. Lorimer Award for Distinguished Service. This is the 12th year the Linda K. Lorimer Award for Distinguished Service has been given, and it celebrates staff who embody Yale’s spirit of leadership, innovation, collaboration, and excellence.    “Fueled by a steadfast commitment to scientific excellence, Matthews spearheaded improvements to the hematology research lab: leading a major revamp of the team’s biorepository, streamlining core procedures, and expanding training initiatives. His vision has resulted in lasting improvements that accelerate research, establishing a model of excellence and efficiency.”

Our #SmilowStar this week is Stacey LaRosa, APRN. With significant clinical experience gained through her roles as RN to Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner, Stacey has provided a wealth of knowledge to the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Waterbury team over the last eight years.    As a caring, kind, and proficient clinician, Stacey is always going above and beyond. She has an approachable demeanor and is willing to tackle the toughest of patient cases for all providers throughout the practice. She works diligently and efficiently, always fostering a positive working environment.  She is prompt to address nursing concerns or questions at the drop of a hat, and her ability to make patients feel comfortable during an overwhelming time is admirable. Stacey sees the patient as a whole person and not just their diagnosis, always doing her best to help the patient maintain their sense of self.    Stacey is nothing shy of an exemplary provider, and we are proud she is part of the Smilow family!
