- Hey, take a look at this. I open up Claude on my phone and send the prompt, "Check my email to find my flight to Oslo." Claude, the AI chat app, goes to my Gmail account, searches for any relevant emails, and gives me an answer. This is MCP, the Model Context Protocol, in action, facilitating communication between an AI chat app and an external service, in this case, Gmail, and this simple example illustrates just how powerful MCP is and why this new protocol is at the center of the push for agentic AI. Let's rewind a bit. The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, was introduced by Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, in November 2024 as an open standard that enables developers to build secure two-way connections between their data sources and AI-powered tools.
