Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings) is cutting 4,000 administrative jobs by 2030 and raising its medium-term return target. Through digitalization, automation, and more efficient processes, 4,000 jobs are to be eliminated by the end of the decade, the airline announced on Monday. Reuters already learned last week that 20 percent of jobs outside of direct flight operations are to be eliminated. The MDAX-listed group also set a higher medium-term financial target at an investor conference: The adjusted return on sales is to be eight to ten percent starting in 2028 – previously, the company had targeted eight percent, but rarely achieved this due to high costs. https://lnkd.in/eu37HHME

I am glad to share an article on my research on the hurdles of #UAM's air traffic management. 📡 I analysed the airspace configurations in several European countries and compared the differences in Class G airspace. I also explored the current drone regulations in these countries. 💡 The key takeaway is that UAM has been left out and is not flyable due to #ATC difficulties. An opportunity to reflect on the recent jet fuel shortage at Hamburg Airport (https://lnkd.in/efRtfgdw) — and to ask how such situations can be prevented in the future. For an airport of this size (>14 mln pax) to be supplied solely by road from a single refinery places it in a vulnerable position, especially when we think long-term. 🚆 There are three key reasons why some airports (especially those with an annual passenger traffic exceeding 3-5 mln pax) in Germany and beyond should consider complementing road deliveries with rail (and in some cases pipeline or waterborne) fuel receipt facilities: 1️⃣ Security & resilience of supply – Rail connections diversify delivery options and reduce dependency on a single refinery (or a limited number of refineries). 2️⃣ Sustainability – Replacing dozens of daily truck trips with trains significantly cuts CO₂ emissions. In fact, the positive environmental impact of shifting airport fuel logistics from truck to rail is far greater than electrifying ground handling fleet (though the latter is also important and can only be welcomed). 3️⃣ Economics of scale and reduced marginal freight costs – One block train can carry as much fuel as ~50 road tankers, significantly lowering logistics costs per tonne and improving efficiency. 🥬 And there’s more: with increasing quotas for supplying SAF at Union Airports, future rail receipt infrastructure will also enable easier, large-scale physical SAF deliveries, which is in the core of RefuelEU Aviation Act. Yes, building rail facilities requires time and resources. But the sooner stakeholders in the industry start working on that, the better airports will be prepared for challenges that lie ahead of their strategic development plans. Düsseldorf Airport, for example, has already taken a step in this direction by including a rail receipt facility in its master plan. The question is: will others follow? The status quo — reliance on a single mode of transport by road — will not fix itself for the airports of a relevant scale and ambitions. This is a highly relevant reflection. Diversifying jet fuel delivery methods not only strengthens airport resilience against supply chain disruptions but also plays a crucial role in reducing Scope 3 emissions. The GHG reduction achieved by shifting fuel transport from road to rail can be on par with the impact of major fleet electrification initiatives. As EU airports strategically advance their aviation decarbonization efforts, investing in robust, multimodal fuel infrastructure is essential - not only to ensure operational continuity but also to drive meaningful sustainability progress.

In the latest 2025 Aerostructures report, we evaluate Spirit acquisition and the impact this will have on the market going forward. Why it matters? • Spirit was originally spun-out of Boeing in 2005; before then we estimated outsourcing accounted for 51% of the market • The spinout along with successive highly-outsourced programmes increased the amount of outsourcing to an estimated 61% in 2024 • Taking Spirit’s market share that goes to Boeing and Airbus, along with Airbus Atlantic and Premium Aerotec, that moves outsourced content to 44% (albeit some of Airbus’s Atlantic revenue serves other OEMs) Some of this consolidation is driven by profitability challenges along the supply chain. Much of it, however, is driven by changes in OEM strategy, with aerostructures now seen as a core in-house competency for the OEM.
