Indigenous Connection Recognised Nationally for Culturally Led Disaster Readiness Darwin-based Indigenous Connection has been Highly Commended at the 2025 Resilient Australia Awards, honoured for its groundbreaking research into cultural capital and emergency management on the Tiwi Islands. Co-designed and delivered by Tiwi and Yolngu Cultural Knowledge Providers, the project explored how embedding cultural knowledge, leadership and community participation can strengthen natural disaster readiness across remote Northern Australia. Supported by the NAB Foundation and CRC for Developing Northern Australia, the research identified clear opportunities to integrate cultural expertise into Local Emergency Management and expand paid cultural employment pathways on Country. The recognition highlights the vital role First Nations-led approaches play in building safer, more resilient communities.
