🚨 Member Alert 🚨 MHRA approves first licensed low-dose atropine for childhood #myopia in the UK The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved the first licensed low-dose atropine treatment for slowing the progression of childhood myopia. Ryjunea® (low-dose atropine 0.1 mg/ml), licensed by Santen, is indicated for children aged 3–14 years with myopia between –0.50 DS and –6.00 DS and a progression rate of 0.50 DS or more per year. The product will be a prescription-only medicine (POM), available initially for private prescribing. NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, is awaiting ministerial approval to begin a technology appraisal of low-dose atropine and remains a privately funded intervention until NICE completes its review. This week is #MedicinesSafetyWeek and the theme is ‘we can all help make medicines safer.’ It’s a reminder that everyone has a role in ensuring patient safety and we are proud to support this. Our group was established in 2015 and is a great example of collaboration and shared responsibility across the sector. Our group, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, brings together Medication Safety Officers to share insights and improve practices across community pharmacy. One of the shared resources is a video, aimed at community pharmacy teams, offering practical guidance on the safe supply of fentanyl. It includes helpful tips to support medicine safety. This video is part of a broader focus on opioids and high-risk medicines. Stay tuned for the next instalment in the series, which will address methadone safety. Great to teach our 3rd year pharmacy students about the value of the UCSF Industry Documents Library and UCSF-JHU Opioid Industry Documents Archive. We discussed the critical role these documents have played in revealing how Walgreens contributed to the early prescription #opioid epidemic through improper opioid dispensing, which included stores dispensing opioid prescriptions without resolving red flags and management pressuring pharmacists to fill more opioid prescriptions. https://lnkd.in/g47uFfuc Amazing teaching resource for anyone working on the Commercial Determinants of Health.
