Why people management skills are crucial for leaders

This title was summarized by AI from the post below.

Too many organisations treat people management skills as an afterthought. That was certainly not the case at IBM early in my career, where being a good people manager was treated as a top priority, for anyone in that role who wanted to keep it. Your ability as a people manager to develop talent and lead your team was measured and rewarded with the same rigour as your financial performance. IBM had conviction that great managers multiply the impact of everyone around them. What made a real difference wasn't just the formal training programs for aspiring and new managers, but the regular, honest feedback your people manager gave you. Over 14 years at the company I never had a manager who didn’t care about my development. The feedback I received as to how I could be a better manager was uncomfortable at times but highlighted blind spots I didn't know existed and pushed me to be better. Unfortunately I rarely come across organisations that treat people management with the discipline I experienced at IBM. I hear a lot of excuses as to why. Managers can go months or years without receiving meaningful feedback on their people management skills. This feedback vacuum doesn't just impede individual development, it creates a cascading effect where poor management practices become entrenched, talented employees leave, and strategy execution lags. When was the last time you received helpful feedback about your people management skills?

You make a great point Steve. I think these conversations too often fall into the ‘too hard’ basket because we fear upsetting or alienating our peers and colleagues.

Great insights, Steve. I’m curious about how you see this evolving within today’s much leaner organizational structures. Many of us are now expected to lead, influence, and develop others without having large teams or even any direct reports. From your perspective, how can people build strong people-management skills when they are no longer in traditional manager roles?

Great insight Steve Vamos and so true. Today feedback seems to be part of performance assessment and just to me is generally more about the process than the people.
