Congratulations to the team behind 40 Thorndike on winning the Sustainable Whole-Building Renovation award at the Built Environment Plus Green Building Showcase! The Green Engineer was proud to contribute to this remarkable project, which transformed a former courthouse and jail, once an opaque and unwelcoming barrier, into a vibrant LEED Gold certified, WELL Gold pending, mixed use destination with affordable housing, office space, and retail. Through a decade of thoughtful planning and meaningful community engagement, the team reimagined one of the most challenging structures into a true neighborhood asset featuring publicly accessible ground level spaces that foster connection and cultural vibrancy. This project exemplifies out of the box thinking that values occupant wellbeing and positive climate impact, proving that sustainable renovation can turn architectural challenges into opportunities that strengthen communities.
