After delivering the Illawarra Indigenous Business Expo ONE thing has become clear: community owned events create the strongest outcomes!! To share this approach more widely, I’m launching an online workshop. Community Led Expos: A Guide for Hosting a Successful Indigenous Business Expo A 1.5 hour online session that walks participants through the full journey: planning, engagement, logistics, sponsorship, finance, community protocols and post event evaluation. This workshop draws directly from the lessons of the Illawarra Indigenous Business Expo, now entering its third year and steadily growing in impact, attendance and community leadership. The goal is simple: support more communities to design and deliver their own events in ways that honour culture, centre community voices and create real opportunities for local Indigenous businesses. If you or your organisation is interested in running an expo or learning the model, you’re welcome to register below. 🫁 We’re proud to see the It’s Good to Know campaign launch. #ItsGoodToKnow is an equity-first campaign that aims to raise awareness of the life-saving National Lung Cancer Screening Program. Lung cancer is the most common cancer among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, but with lung screening we can change this. Because if found early, over 65% of lung cancers can be successfully treated. We partnered with the Australian Government and a consortium of community-based organisations to make the It’s Good to Know campaign person-centred and inclusive to ensure all eligible people have the information and support they need to participate in this program. Those who are eligible should yarn with their doctor or health worker about lung screening – because it’s good to know. We are ecstatic to share that today’s Google Doodle honours the incomparable and magnificent, Aunty Ruby Hunter. It has been an honour and privilege to have worked on this project in close partnership with Aunty Ruby’s family, Arrernte and Kalkadoon artist Thea Anamara Perkins, and our friends at Google to acknowledge, spotlight and pay tribute to a woman whose legacy and impact is imprinted on generations of people. Aunty Ruby’s creativity knew no bounds – singing, acting, playing diverse instruments – she could do it all. Her activism, compassion for others and her ability to nurture through music, song and acts of love, changed countless lives across Australia. This breathtaking hand painted Google Doodle created by Arrernte and Kalkadoon artist, Thea Anamara Perkins captures Aunty Ruby playing her guitar on her traditional Ngarrindjeri Country. One of Aunty Ruby’s cultural totems, the pelican, looks on from the beautiful Kurongk (Coorong). We encourage you to learn more about Aunty Ruby, her life and her legacy which is now upheld by her two sons and extended family. A heartfelt thank you to Aunty Ruby’s family who entrusted us with this honour and to the remarkable Thea Perkins who created magic with every brushstroke and truly captured Aunty Ruby and her powerful essence.
