The Sep/Oct issue of Architecture Australia is out now. It includes my review of Balam Balam Place – a new creative and community hub designed by Kennedy Nolan, Openwork and Finding Infinity, and managed by Siteworks. At a time when empathy feels scarce, it was uplifting to understand, see and feel the level of care that took place throughout the entirety of the design and construction process. Named after the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung word for “butterfly,” Balam Balam Place is an exemplar of how architecture can acknowledge the emotional memories buildings hold while creating a space where all are welcome and new chapters can begin. In Episode 5 of Design Speaks Weekly, Timothy Hill FRAIA reflects on the current state of architectural process and explains his use of the term “little ‘a’ architect” as the 2025 Gold Medal tour gets underway. During the conversation, Hill reflects on the paradox that, despite all the advances in digital tools, architecture hasn’t necessarily become more efficient. He notes that while “architects use QWERTY keyboards to make drawings now,” much of the essential knowledge about how buildings are made still comes from two-dimensional drawings. It is a moment of truth when the designers of a tapestry arrive for that first meeting about interpretation. Cox Architecture and Troy Emery recently visited weaver Saffron Gordon at ATW to review her creative proposals for their tapestry design, "Longing (Camilla), short-listed for the Tapestry Design Prize. Saffron showed the team the colour strips she had woven as proposals for the pallette. All the delicately dyed wool was set out alongside the mixed bobbins with up to twelve colours on each, demonstrating how the tones would be achieved. Saffron showed a section of weaving of the creature using rya knots for texture, dimension and fringe effects. She demonstrated some trimming of the shaggy fringe as her tactic for achieving the necessary sculptural effect. The team looked closely at Saffron's suggestions and shared ideas and responses, arriving at an agreed set of artistic approaches that she is now following in her daily weaving. The door at ATW stays open to designers all through the weaving process and there is a joyful exchange that happens throughout each project as it comes to life as a new art-work, a true collaboration. Congratulations to Cox Architecture and Troy Emery who go into the running for the prize. They cited as inspiration for their design the Boyd family pets. Biographer Geoffrey Serle notes in "Robin Boyd: A Life" that the Boyd's always had domestic pets; a dog and a cat (Camilla) towards whom Robin was very affectionate.
