Updates

  • The ABC would like to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of investigative journalists Adele Ferguson and Chris Gillett who last week won the 2025 Gold Walkley Award – Australian journalism’s highest honour – for their ongoing series on systemic failures in childcare. The The Walkley Foundation for Journalism Judging Board unanimously hailed Ferguson and Gillett’s continuing work as the investigation of the year. Since 2024, the pair has been digging into the $20 billion childcare sector. The scale of abuse and neglect of children and babies that they and other ABC News reporters uncovered has laid bare a sector in crisis. Their stories have been published across 7.30, Four Corners, the ABC News website and audio platforms. For their efforts, Ferguson and Gillett won three prestigious Walkley Awards: for TV/Video Current Affairs Short, TV/Video Current Affairs Long, and All Media Investigative Journalism – the latter two with colleagues Ben Butler and Lara Sonnenschein. They were also finalists in All Media: Coverage of a Major Event category and Scoop of the Year. The ABC’s sustained scrutiny of the sector has resulted in State and Federal Governments and providers enacting immediate reforms, several inquiries, resignations of key childcare sector figures and renewed calls for a Royal Commission. The reporting has also prompted a raft of new measures aimed at keeping children safe, including an overhaul of the working with children checks system, expanded CCTV trials and work on a national register of early childhood educators. Recently, it was announced that the Senate inquiry established to investigate the safety of Australia’s early childhood education system would cross-examine police, law enforcement and other experts in an urgent hearing into child sex offenders in childcare later this month, directly attributed to Four Corners reports. We’re proud of our team for their work on this challenging story. You can read stories from the series here: https://ab.co/48m7aqw If you have a story of your own to share, please get in touch.

  • At just seventeen, Joan of Arc convinced the French prince to let her lead an army against the English, turning the tide of the Hundred Years’ War. But her victories came at a price: captured, accused of heresy, and burned alive at nineteen. Was she a divinely inspired saviour or a dangerous fanatic? Centuries later, her story still provokes questions about faith, gender, and power — and how belief can turn an ordinary girl into a national saint. 🎧 Stream God Forbid's Religious Rebels on the ABC listen app: https://ab.co/48fJqEq
