“Don’t kid yourself that it can’t happen here,” distinguished journalist Kerry O’Brien has warned in a powerful speech on press freedom at the 70th Walkley Awards in Sydney. “The message is becoming stark for our own country.” O’Brien’s rallying cry followed a video package that highlighted what he described as “the appalling and outrageous casualty list of Palestinian journalists and other media workers in Israel’s war on Gaza since the brutal attack by Hamas on Israeli citizens two years ago”.
