The business community has welcomed new NSW Liberal leader Kellie Sloane MP. As a former businesswoman, Ms Sloane’s perspective will be critical and ensuring the priorities of the 875,000+ businesses in this state are top of mind for government. “Kellie Sloane has become opposition leader at a critical moment for the state,” Business NSW CEO Daniel Hunter said. “Our members consistently say insurance costs, taxes and government levies and energy costs are the top three concerns for their business. “That’s why the Coalition must take advantage of this renewed opportunity to pass workers’ compensation reforms before Christmas. “This straightforward change will not only save businesses from going under, but will also inject much-needed confidence for the more than 320,000 businesses which pay these premiums. “There are also significant opportunities to improve insurance costs by abolishing the emergency services levy, reinstating Business Connect, and continually driving down the cost of energy. “Making these changes would ensure businesses can thrive in a very competitive national and international environment. "Business NSW also welcomes the reappointment of The Hon Natalie Ward MLC as Deputy Liberal Leader. "We will continue to work with Ms Ward in ensuring businesses across the state have the opportunity to thrive. “I want to thank former leader Mark Speakman for his service to the people of NSW. “Public service requires significant sacrifices and he held the role with integrity and purpose.”

I was on air this morning with 702 ABC Sydney's Hamish Macdonald to talk about workers comp and the challenges NSW businesses are facing. We asked members about the 36% rise in workers comp premiums in May, and we asked them again in recent weeks. The numbers only went up: nearly half of SMEs say they’d need to scale back or even cut staff. That’s not just numbers - it’s jobs, communities, and the future of doing business in NSW. I’m an optimist. The government is listening to us and reform is within reach. We need a workers comp scheme that works for everyone - and your feedback is driving that change. Today is a huge day for the business community. NSW Parliamentarians will be voting on the reforms to the workers’ compensation legislation. This morning, I joined Independent MPs Alex Greenwich and Joe McGirr, Business Sydney Executive Director Paul Nicolaou and a host of disability support providers at Parliament House to deliver a simple message: without reform, businesses will be forced to scale back operations, not hire new staff or – for one in five members – shut their doors. We understand that the crossbench compromise will keep premiums substantially lower than the 12% per year increase (or 36% over three years) businesses are facing under a do-nothing scenario. This compromise delivers sustainable premiums and will continue to protect injured workers. The new, fit-for-purpose mental assessment for psychological injuries – designed by the NSW health chief psychiatrist – will be an important mechanism in fixing a broken system. One of our members, a family-owned food business, has had their workers' compensation premiums jump more than 70% in just two years – that’s nearly $200,000 extra. That’s money they could be using to hire more staff, give pay rises, or invest back into their business. These reforms will also restore some much-needed objectivity to the system. There are 320,000 businesses paying workers' compensation premiums. Those businesses help the livelihoods and wellbeing of millions of people who work for them. We must ensure these businesses survive and then thrive. #WorkersCompensationReform

A fresh proposal to reform NSW’s workers’ compensation scheme is a win for the 320,000 businesses that pay premiums and will continue to look after injured workers. Today I joined Independents Alex Greenwich MP and Jacqui Scruby MP – together with NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) CEO Cara Varian and Lowri Williams from National Disability Services – to support an alternative proposal to reform the workers’ compensation scheme. I told Sky News’ Julia Bradley that this commonsense compromise will help stop premiums from spiralling - protecting jobs and ensuring businesses can survive and thrive. Without action, premiums could rise 36% over three years, forcing one in five businesses to shut their doors. This proposal brings certainty, sustainability, and hope. Let’s get it passed by the NSW Parliament. #NSWBusiness #WorkersComp Business NSW
