Sixteen months in, and working with Jem Selig Freeman still feels like a honeymoon 😅 What started as a few trial dowels has grown into a partnership built on trust and curiosity: the kind that makes the work feel easy (and fun). Australian Design Review caught a glimpse of that too, calling out the chemistry that happens when design and material innovation meet, and when good humans choose to work together. “If I were building a staircase, these are the treads I’d use.” When a man who’s spent 50 years in timber says that, you listen. 😆 Hammersmith has been part of Australia’s timber story for four generations, and now, we’re proud to be part of theirs. Their team has seen first-hand how our technology transforms challenging species like Blackbutt and Spotted Gum into stable, high-performance timber. These species are now part of their range, a big nod from a team that knows timber inside out. Loved this reflection from tone wheeler, and so well deserved for the BDAA team. We’re quietly stoked that our timber trophies were seen for what they are: not just polished objects, but a little signal of where design’s heading.

74 trophies, one wild ride: our #BDAA Festival of Design adventure. Sometimes you say yes to something before fully realising what you’ve said yes to... 😅 That was us when we agreed to make the 74 trophies for the BDAA Festival of Design. It started with a spark, a conversation after the Evitat Brace for Impact event earlier this year, where the Building Designers Association of Australia team saw how well our work aligned with their community’s values. From there, it snowballed into the chance to create something special: trophies that represent ingenuity, persistence, and the power of good design. Simple brief, right? Not quite. We’re not trophy makers by trade — just a tiny team of three, punching above our weight, with a can-do streak that’s hard to switch off. 🤣 But when an idea feels right, we find a way. Between tight timelines, design tweaks, lost freight, and a few “please, universe” moments, it cut fine — too fine. But somehow, it all came together the day before the event. Phew! And what an event it was! Panels that hit every note: housing, policy, sustainability, business. JAMIE DURIE hosting the awards with trademark energy. But the real highlight for us? Seeing our material in the hands of every award recipient, celebrating the Building Designers driving change across Australia. A huge thank you to the BDAA team Chris Knierim, Robyne Jones, Darren Evans and Gabi Drage for being calm, kind, and endlessly supportive. And to everyone who stopped by to chat timber with our Darren, despite him losing half his luggage. (Luckily the samples made it!) It was a privilege to contribute to such a meaningful event. This won’t surprise anyone in the timber industry: sustainability and politics often tangle in complicated ways. We came across this study in conversation with Responsible Wood’s Matt de Jongh, and it was an eye opener. It highlights once again how complex the balance between forest management, biodiversity, and public perception can be. It’s exactly why we make it our mission to stay across the facts, listen to the science, and keep contributing to a forestry future that’s genuinely sustainable. Marathon: done. 🏁 Impact: still running. 🏃♂️ Huge respect to our own Darren Minto who took on the Melbourne Marathon to raise funds for the Victorian Homeless Fund — a 100% volunteer-run charity helping families rebuild after violence and hardship. He’s already done the hard yards. Now he’s just shy of his fundraising goal, and every bit of support makes a real difference. If you can, jump in and help him finish strong. Every dollar goes straight to the people who need it most.
